WASHINGTON -- The United States branded China an authoritarian human rights abuser Tuesday, citing alleged torture, state control of basic aspects of daily life, tight controls on religion and harassment of foreign charities.

China, host of the Summer Olympics, has rampant and chronic human rights problems despite rapid economic growth that has transformed large parts of Chinese society, the State Department said in its annual accounting of human rights practices around the world.

The Chinese Embassy did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The study, published each year since 1977, offers a comprehensive analysis of all countries in the world except the United States. There are no automatic penalties to nations that get poor marks.

I can't wait to see the responses from these countries. Should be a real hoot.

1. This year, whatever China's response may be, they will appear to have creditibility ...
For years, after the U.S. names China for its human rights abuses, China responds with a blistering report of U.S. human rights violations that were normally ignored.
