FLORIDA "Massive Power Outage" - loses power in MIAMI, DADE & BROWARD COUNTIES
Edited on Tue Feb-26-08 02:13 PM by cyberpj
Think they were doing some election system testing? :sarcasm:

Saw it on MSNBC and CNN - found only this, online:

Power outage turns South Florida dark:
http://www.miamiherald.com/854/story/434104.html

Transmission problems from Daytona to Miami!
4.4 Million homes affected.

Federal Officials immediately say 'not terrorism related'
(how can they say that so quickly?)
Although TV news headlines say no one knows why this is happening.

6. The article says 'unusally high' temps for this time of year --- 84 to 85 degrees.
Edited on Tue Feb-26-08 02:04 PM by cyberpj
"The service failures came during an unusually warm February day in South Florida, with temperatures reaching near-record highs. At 1 p.m, Miami and West Palm Beach reported a reading of 84 degrees; it was 83 degrees in Fort Lauderdale.

Some air conditioning companies reported summer-like levels of service calls."

22. 84 degrees isn't that big a deal in NYC, how can it be in Florida?
How is it possible that 84 degrees strained their power grid into a breakdown? YES, people put on their air conditioners, but COME ON.

4. tornadoes....
we have been under tornado warnings for the last couple of hours. maybe it is the storms. But, then, is could be HAARP causing the storms, too......so, I think you are right.

Remember the hurricanes? The ones that crisscrossed the middle of the state three times during election season? I don't forget. Took the roof off my house....

Now, where is that darn tinfoil hat in case it rains....

14. Oops!
Looks like most of that crud's headed my way (North Central Fla.). A bit early in the season for the nasty stuff, but that's global warming for you. I'm not at all surprised by the outage in South Florida: it's a perfect storm of over development, graft and crumbling infrastructure.

That's what eight years of Bu$h rule will do. Florida got the Double Whammy: Jeb and Scrub.

11. Say they think it has something to do with Turkey Point, a nuclear power station.
WTF?

Good thing I don't live in Florida.

15. 3 of 8 power generators at Turkey Point are non-functional. No cause for this has been given.
Edited on Tue Feb-26-08 02:42 PM by originalpckelly
I'm getting a little worried, what's going on down there?

If this was a surge or something, why didn't all the units automatically shut off?

They just showed a picture of the facility, which is owned by FPL, on CNN. Not much could be seen, aside from small amounts of water vapor being vented, which is probably not unusual.

Upthread, someone said it was the weather, but the cause is on the other side of FL away from the bad shit. The video on CNN showed fairly clear skies, at the most hazy. Would not say it was stormy.

18. Florida Light and Power won't say what's going on down there at this nuke plant!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turkey_Point_Nuclear_Generating_Station

"Florida Power & Light, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation were investigating the discovery of a small hole drilled into a pipe that helps maintain pressure inside the reactor.<5> This incident took place during a refueling outage when the reactor was not powered, and was quickly identified during power-up testing. The 3/16" hole was drilled into a 3" stainless steel schedule 160 pipe that would hold 600-degree-Fahrenheit reactor coolant water at 2235 psi under normal operation."

What the fuck? Was that sabotage?

and power is coming into the system from "off site" whatever the hell that means.
