Wow, how did I miss this one? After 9/11 Bush appointed envoy who was a lobbiest for the Taliban

From the Independent of London January 10, 2002
CAMPAIGN AGAINST TERRORISM: New US envoy to Kabul lobbied for Taliban oil rights.(News)

THE UNITED STATES' new special envoy to Kabul once lobbied for the Taliban and worked for an American oil company that sought concessions for pipelines in Afghanistan.

Zalmay Khalilzad, who was born in Afghanistan, has arrived in Kabul amid much publicity. As the representative of the country that put the new government in power, he has a highly influential position.

In one of his first press conferences, Mr Khalilzad condemned the Taliban as sponsors of terrorism and vowed the US would continue the military campaign until they and their allies in Osama bin Laden's ...

It is certainly interesting what you can dig up in the archives, why was no one talking about this before? Oh yeah, I forgot who owns our media.

1. "Traitory may be bad for America, but it's great for...
...keeping my corrupt republicon cronies rolling in purloined taxpayer money.
Without a republicon crony in a key position, how could we keep the opium and heroin flowing?"

3. I wouldn't be surprised if it was
announced that Osama has a ranch in Crawford next to shrub, or Jenna gets married to a Bin Laden, these people are in the rarified strata of the rich. Let the little people lose their minds on these things.:tinfoilhat:

4. "...why was no one talking about this before?" We were, here on DU.

I'm not being snarky, I'm just saying that there were lots of us pointing this sort of thing out -- with plenty of links and citations -- right here on DU.

Thanks to the internet, there was all KINDS of information available to anyone who wanted to dig deeper than all the tripe and hysteria being promoted by the U.S. corporate media after 9/11. I posted almost non-stop in those days, I had pages and pages of news articles and research bookmarked.

Many of us were doing all we possibly could to bring these sorts of facts to light, trying our damnedest to break through the lizard brain reactionary fog that took possession of even some of the most formerly rational minds.

And we were awarded tinfoil hats for our trouble.

But you have my sincere thanks for resurrecting this particular fact. If people missed this before, at least they have a chance to look at it now.

6. Yeah, I was reading a lot of similar stories from the beginning
I was actually paying very close attention at the time, but somehow I missed this one. I figured there would probably be a few others on here who had heard about, but I figured if I missed it when I was obsessively following the alternative media a lot of other people had probably missed it as well. And even if they hadn't missed it, it is always good to have a reminder.

10. Yes, that's why I wanted to be sure to thank you.
I literally spent hours and hours every single day for MONTHS after 9/11, researching every single thing I could possibly find that might be in any way relevant. I was truly obsessed, I wanted to get at the capital-T TRUTH, because I absolutely did NOT believe what the government was trying to sell us.

Yes, it is always good to have a reminder.

7. Hey, when did I claim to know everything?
If you don't want to get called on not being up on your facts, don't say "I don't agree with everything you stated" and then tell me you disagree with a couple of undeniable facts.

9. I used the words...
"I DON'T RECALL!!!"

Get over yourself.

"I don't agree with everything you stated"... still.

12. Calm down, please.

Do you expect me not to respond to a direct challenge. I wasn't trying to prove myself better than you by any means, I simply wanted to stand by what I was saying. What is wrong with defending yourself when you are directly challenged on some points.

Seriously, I had no ill intentions towards you I don't know why you have so much bad blood against me for it. I was not upset at all, but now you are hijacking my threads. Please lets make peace, I never wanted to turn this into a big argument.

Just stating the facts, as I see them.

"Seriously, I had no ill intentions towards you..."

I'm sure you didn't but you implied I had been less than vigilant and I beg to differ.
Just wanted to clarify.

Have a great night.

11. Khalilzad a major player - PNAC!
He was working on the UNOCAL pipeline deal, lobbying for Taliban, a signatory of the PNAC mission statement alongside Cheney/Rumsfeld/Bush, envoy to Afghanistan AND later envoy to Iraq, all at key points.

Anyone know where he is now?
