Binge eating advice?
I've recently starting have urges to eat everything in the pantry again but thankfully this time I trying my best to keep it under control. However the feeling of hunger won't go away and then whenever I do eat, even if it's a small granola bar, I feel like I just gained 300 pounds. Any advice or tips?

Thanks!

1. Chips & Salsa. The Salsa is actually good for you!
....unless you have high potassium.

3. I've read that protein will help curb those cravings
Perhaps you should have a protein drink/shake or something analogous.

5. Please see a doc who specializes in eating disorders
because if you don't have one yet, it sounds like you are headed in that direction.

Good luck.

Seeking medical help will be more useful than asking DU.

8. Stock lots of high fiber stuff in your fridge...
Edited on Thu Feb-14-08 04:51 PM by antigone382
fresh greens, carrots, various fruits and veggies...also high protein stuff like nuts, and maybe a little cottage cheese or yogurt. One of my favorite snacks is baby carrots in hummus. Fiber, protein, deliciousness, best of all worlds. Chips and salsa are cool too, though a little high in sodium. Go with blue corn chips if you can afford it...more protein/less carbs. Drink plenty of water. Combined with filling and nutritious food, it should help keep your appetite in check.

Think about your hunger; is there a particular food you're craving but don't have access to? Your body may be telling you that you need some nutritional component of that food (I crave rare steak at certain times of the month, for example).

I used to binge on comfort food all the time. It took me years to train myself to go for the things that were good for me and to listen to my body when it was telling me that I needed something. I'm about twenty-five pounds thinner now than I was in high school, and I don't really miss things like soft drinks, chips, and sugary snacks so much when I know I have healthy and delicious options sitting in the fridge.

edit: also, I wouldn't rely on it too much, but a cup or two of coffee or tea a day can increase your metabolism and curb your appetite.

12. yes,yes,yes high fiber!
I have lost 25 pound over the last year and a half. I'm not on a diet per say I just eat better.

I switched from pop tarts for breakfast to "aunt millies" 9 grain bread (toasted) with
smart balance spread and 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon & sugar per slice. 2 slices only about
200 calories compared to 400 for pop tarts. High fiber makes you feel full tastes good & keeps
you regular.

antigone382 is right on the money !

Eat good!
Live long & liberal!

9. maybe the sensation you express
about the granola bar and feeling as though you gained weight could be bloating? I had the same thing, and esp. when I ate something with wheat or whey. Just a guess that you take notice of which foods do and do not make you feel that way. I'm also in agreement with another poster here who said you may need protein.

I didn't look at your profile, but if you are female, maybe hormones are playing a part in the "hungry" aspect.
