U.S. Education Department snoops into contractors’ financial, medical files

Intrusive background checks unfair to academic researchers

Apparently infused with the we-must-know-everything-about-you mentality of the Bush White House and the Pentagon, federal education bureaucrats are engaged in a Peeping Tom operation.

As The New York Times reported recently, for about a year the Education Department has been collecting personal financial and even medical records of employees for many of the contractors it hires.

Many of these employees are academic researchers, and the department’s justifications for invading their privacy sound pretty lame.

The Times story included the example of Andrew A. Zucker, an educator who was a consultant for a subcontractor on a Pennsylvania State University contract.
