Woof! City May Limit How Long Dog Can Bark
Woof! City May Limit How Long Dog Can Bark

(CBS/AP) CLIFTON, N.J. The city of Clifton is not going to the dogs. At least not if the City Council has anything to do about it. Later this month, the council is expected to introduce an ordinance setting a limit on how long dogs can bark.

Noisy canines will be defined as those that bark for more than 30 minutes on two consecutive days.

The city already has nuisance and "noise laws that can be used to address annoying and disturbing noises such as constant barking." But officials said those laws are sometimes difficult to enforce.

Police have to investigate complaints, and the city Health Department sent 11 letters last year warning that a summons could be issued if the barking continued, health officer John Biegel said. Clifton has issued 3,756 dog licenses this year.

Summonses are rare, because the person who complained must go to court to sign a complaint.

3. my dog barks for hours - while running around the tree
He is sure it is haunted by ghosts of animals or something. He has worn a path around the tree. He has done this for over two years. I don't know what he will do when we move to CA next month...

14. Mine stays inside - BUT
The dog next door, not the barker, and my dog have a 'thing'. They run up and down the fence for as long as we'll let them, barking at each other. Our town is basically on sand. The dog has ran up and down that fence for so long that she's dug a 2 ft ditch. Bark bark, run run, half of her disappears into the ditch and then pops up on the other end. Crazy. We fill it in, she runs through it in no time. We both figure the dogs are getting exercise and they can't get through the fence so we let them go. Crazy.

17. Yes to both :)
He has a son, we named wiggles, who is chocolate in color and 1.5 times his size. They are best buddies and poor wiggles is carried around by daughter on all sorts of adventures, he just looks hopeless but he goes along with her and plays :)

7. It's hard to stop something as natural as barking
I guess maybe if we fine the dogs themselves and make em appear in court they might stop.

Hopefully my dog would get the judge from the Anna Nicole trial (crying) "I find in favor of buster, the dog, and order the plaintiff to move to the bahamas."

8. Fine the dogs themselves... hmm
That might account for another behavioral quirk. The beagle has a habit of taking loose change off tabletops and dressers, and squirelling it away in a corner of the dining room. Maybe she's anticipating such a law?

5. Good thing
People have so little respect for the peace and quiet of their neighborhoods that these sorts of laws are desperately needed. I wish we had police in my town who actually cared to pull idiot Harley riders over and give them noise tickets. Morons riding up and down the street all hours of the night--and not real bikers, but middle aged business guys, out pretending. In the winter, if there's snow, it's the neighborhood kids with snowmobiles. In the summer, jetskis and those silly little motorized scooters. Sometimes, living on the beach is almost not worth the continual headache.

10. The Harleys are the worst.
In summer in Denver I can't tell you how many times I get jarred out of a sound sleep by some dumbass on a Harley blasting off from the stoplight down the street. It almost forces you to close the window on a perfectly beautiful night to turn on the AC just to dampen the noise.

11. I wouldn't use the AC if there weren't the Harleys
Around here, they slowly cruise up and down the street, stopping at every stop sign, and then gunning it to the next stop sign. We have law here against straight pipes, but I've never seen any of our cops hand out a single noise ticket. They do take people's open beer, so the cops aren't a total waste, but I do wish they'd do something about the Harleys.

13. Good! Some Dog Owners Can Be So Discourteous
I would never put my speakers in my window and blast my neighbors with music for more than 30 minutes.

And yet, some dog owners will let their dogs bark and bark and bark and bark for 30 minutes or more.

And, as if that isn't bad enough, sometimes this goes on before 8:00 a.m. or after 10:00 p.m.

It's too bad a law like this has to be passed.

People should just be more considerate and courteous towards their neighbors.

16. Oh, I still think it is up to the dog, how long he barks...
My sweetie doggie girl is not a barker, thank heavens. Her first year was in a fairly sound-proofed condo, so she never heard a lot of barking dogs or outside sounds until we'd go to the park together... I think that made a big difference...
