'Sicko' has been nominated for an Oscar.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22780634/

Michael Moore — who castigated President Bush over the Iraq War in his best-documentary acceptance speech for “Bowling for Columbine” in 2003 — is back in Oscar contention with his health-care documentary “Sicko.”

War-on-terror documentaries dominated the category, with “Sicko” up against “No End in Sight,” “Operation Homecoming: Writing the Wartime Experience” and “Taxi to the Dark Side.”

1. Then I hope the producers settle the strike.
So we can have the Oscars.

14. I suspect they will.
Golden Globes usually give a big boost to a lot of product - but without it this year they felt the difference. They can't afford to lose the Oscar boost - it would be a financial disaster.

3. Sicko was terrific. I hope Michael wins.
Messages outlining the way we could live, and that others are already doing so, and how they've accomplished it, are the way to actually making it happen.

6. Off to the Best page, and well deserved!
It is Michael Moore's best film to date.
We had to go to Canada to see it.

7. I'm looking forward now to the Writers' strike being concluded in
favor of the writers, the Oscar ceremony, Michael Moore winning ANOTHER Oscar, and (of course), his acceptance speech.

8. Good, but "No End in Sight" is a better film, IMO.

11. Both films got great reviews
but yes, technically No End In Sight got better reviews: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/no_end_in_sight/

Personally, I'd prefer that Sicko win because I think the majority of Americans already realize how much Bush and Co f*d up with Iraq.

Granted, I realize they don't grasp the full extent and just how awful this all was/is, but I think it's more important to swing popular opinion even further toward a single payer system. Not to take away from No End In Sight, don't get me wrong!

13. Complete agreement here
No End In Sight was clearly (IMO) the best feature documentary of the past 10 years.

9. "No End in Sight" is good and is on google video, streaming.
I recommend it.

"Taxi to the Dark Side" is "out there" to be had and downloaded also if one knows where to find it. I will watch it within the next few days.

15. It's also cool that Tommy Lee Jones got best actor nomination for "In the Valley of Elah"
Edited on Tue Jan-22-08 05:29 PM by calipendence
I remember when I saw it that I thought that was one nomination I thought was going to happen!

It's a film that ALL of us should see here! It really illustrates how PTSD from this frickin' war is a time bomb waiting to happen! I'm sure that Susan Sarandon, who directed it, would also appreciate that. Though Viggo Mortenson might be the favorite, my feeling is that Tommy should get it!

19. Sicko is by far his most important movie and in my opinion his best
It's relevant to 99% of this country.

The health care system in this country will likely collapse in the next ten years. A "for profit" health care system is in itself inherently made to serve those with money.

And the rest can go drop dead I guess or just get extremely sick...
