what do you do for a living?
I am wondering what kind of jobs are out there. How big is your company? What do you do there?

I work for a smaller shipping company ($100million sales / year) and do EDI (electronic) billing and work on their website. I have been here for almost 10 years now.

5. I'm a self-employed legal transcriptionist
I worked here as a legal secretary/paralegal from 1975 until 2001, when my firm downsized. They wanted me to stay, but I didn't like the people who were going to be remaining, so I quit the biz and began doing transcripts at home, which I'd been doing part-time before that. I don't make nearly as much money, but I enjoy it a lot more.

184. Me too! How do you like it? How long have you been retired?
I retired after some surgical complications made it impossible for me to work for about 6 months. I'm fine now but at 68 I feel that I want freedom from the work world. I had the income to retire so I did.

Now I must say I look for things to fill my time. DU is it for a part of each day but I have other things too. At some point I'll get back to volunteering as a Literacy Volunteer.

Now we're volunteers and travel and just enjoying... the rest of our lives. Audio Al (age 73) is a literacy volunteer and a Democratic committee person in our county, too.

272. I always read your posts and consider you to have an ideal "retirement."
Me, I'm still sometimes working out old resentments (which are fading) about age discrimination used against me and several other women at my next to last workplace. Slowly, I'm getting over the injustices I saw.

I'm loving my travel! I'll be in Northern Italy in a "road less traveled" kind of tour which includes Turin, Bologna and a few little towns like Verona and Ferrara, winding up in Venice (with a side trip to nearby Padua to see some famous Giotto frescoes). I love doing research on the art and the food of each region and even each little town!

I can see retirement on the horizon (keeping fingers crossed) but with the economy tanking and people not using credit/charge cards, I foresee layoffs in the near future. Maybe they will give me early retirement. One can only hope.

177. With my background
I could volunteer for SCORE. Among other things I have a law degree and an MBA with concentrations in finance and management. I have worked in the insurance industry (property and casualty) overseeing a variety of administrative, regulatory, finance and claim matters. I have also worked as an investment portfolio manager doing some fairly complex financial analysis. Seems I am too old to change careers and start over in an entry level position. I have no desire to practice law. And headhunters and potential employers have both observed that I would be better served to start my own business rather than continue to seek employment. If I am forced to make that choice I will do work that I enjoy - and work which does not serve their interests at my detriment. I am trying to acquire the trade, craft and art skills required to start a small business producing tangible products.

But thanks for the suggestion. SCORE does good work and provides a valuable service.

Edited on Tue Jan-22-08 12:27 PM by TlalocW
The small company I work for developed a suite of user-friendly web form tools (which I've greatly improved - no ego, there) that can be used by our clients to control their websites from content to photo galleries to an online store plus much more. Our company is only about 20 people, but we've done a lot of good work. In fact, we did Garth Brooks' website.

I also perform close-up magic, kids' magic, and balloon twisting on the side at parties, restaurants, and other events.

I've flown a few Citations as copilot but I don't have a type rating for them. They've made so many variations I can barely tell one from the other any more! The X is, I believe, approved for single-pilot. Most versions aren't though.
Very nice planes for sure. :-)

129. Actually, the Citation X is the highest performing Citation. Hence, 2 pilots required.
I flew a Citation X for a magazine article a number of years ago. I flew left seat with a Cessna test pilot in the right seat .. from Detroit to Grand Cayman Island. We cruised at 0.91 Mach at FL 450. The Citation X is the fastest business jet .. that is it's claim to fame.

The distinguishing features of a Citation X are its BIG engines and highly swept wings. It is also the only Citation with leading edge devices.

Arnold Palmer was the first to buy a Citation X. Palmer took delivery of his new Citation X in June, 1996.

Cessna Citation X: Notice the wing sweep and the deployed leading edge devices.

103. It's a thankless job, isn't it? In the district in which I
work, the regular classroom teachers get to evaulate the "sub" on a questionnaire when they return. The subs do not get to evaulate the regular teacher, however, in terms of the quality of the lesson plan they left or didn't leave. The other day I subbed for a 7th grade teacher who was out sick. She e-mailed the office manager with a reminder to have me collect some sort of written assignment, but left no other plans. I was on my own, very unhappily and frustratedly "winging it" all day.

140. Oh God! I hate that!
I'm always paranoid that I'm going to get a bad report even if I'm left without a lesson plan. It's not like the kids are going to be very helpful in letting you know where they left off! I recently had a three-day assignment with no lesson plan. It was pretty painful, ha ha!

143. If I was left for three days without a lesson plan, I'd wing it
the first day and bring videos for the second and third - and I would make no apologies. In my district the teachers are required to leave a lesson plan. (The class the other day was the first where I've had nothing to go on.) Some are actually quite detailed, and some are ridiculous. One time a high school English teacher asked me to grade essays for an honors English Lit course during her "free" period. Sure.

It's good to hear from a fellow "Guest Teacher." One of the most difficult aspects of subbing, I think, is that there's no commeraderie on the job.

My attitude, however, is "I'm getting paid no matter how rotten the class is, and it's only temporary, and I'm out by 3, so what the hell."

31. Flute Makers (mom and pops)
Edited on Tue Jan-22-08 12:38 PM by ClayZ
We have made our living making Stoneware Ocarinas and Porcelain Flutes for 30 years. We raised 4 kids, and now have 5 Grandkids. We are blessed. Our studio is in our basement. We sell our wares at the Pike Place Market in Seattle.

We are now putting together a teaching program for Elementary Schools. We have helped to design and market a recycled plastic version of the 4 hole ocarina. It plays a 13 note range and is great for kids and classroom. Working in the classroom over the years has been one of the best parts of the our journey.

We were recently visited by a young man who told us that one of our ocarinas was his first instrument. He now plays flute with the Hong Kong Symphony. :-)

Lots of money: NO

Lots of fun: Yes

www.clayz.com (Sorry for the old website, we made it ourselves years ago... we are working on a new one.)

75. Did you hear the one about...
The line at the pearly gates arrives at Peter's Entrance.

St. Peter asked the first guy, "How much did you make last year?"

The guy answers, "Oh, about $150,000"

"And what did you do?", asks Peter.

"I was a lawyer.", the guy answers.

"C'mon in", says Peter.

St. Peter asked the next guy, "How much did you make last year?"

The guy answers, "Oh, about $300,000"

"And what did you do?", asks Peter.

"I was a surgeon.", the guy answers.

"C'mon in", says Peter.

The next guy in the line is sheepishly kicking up some cloud when Peter asks him "How much did you make last year?"

The guy thinks hard, "Hmmmm. If I add that...oh, yeah there was that other time...oh, about $11,000."

Peter exclaims, "Yeah, man! Where'd you gig?"

Edited on Tue Jan-22-08 02:49 PM by ProudDad
the way I do it...

Is to put a link to the item in question on the web site.

Or...

I create a fairly small file -- in my case audio or video in mp3 format -- and use my FTP client to drop it on my web site. I can then link to the local document for folks.

I print my camo for military vehicles.

My camo...

is less expensive than painted camo
is easier to apply
is safer
conceals better
requires less training to install
requires less equipment to install
creates no harmful fumes during installation (unless you melt a hole in it with the torch while you're hanging it, so don't do that)
leaves no hazardous waste
is not all that flammable (one of my customers tried burning a piece of it on purpose; they had to put diesel on it to get it to ignite)
contains no isocyanates
is quicker to change

...shall I go on?

I've been doing transcription on and off for nearly 40 years, starting back when I freelanced on an old electric portable typewriter at home nights after my day job. As a result, I haven't had any formal training, such as is available these days.

A friend of mine, who wanted to get a job after years of being a homemaker, took an _ROP_ course and got hired right away. Check your local community colleges and adult education centers. There are also on-line courses you can pay to take, but I suspect they charge way too much.

To be a medical transcriptionist, you must (1) know medical terminology, (2) have good basic English grammar/spelling skills, and (3) have good computer keyboard skills. Beyond that, it all depends what's available in your area and how hard you're willing to work.

97. I've sold collectible stuff since right after ebay started. That has faded the past few years
for many reasons too complicated for me to go into here. So about 8 or 9 months ago, I started looking around ebay at stuff I thought might fit in with my creative artistic bent and with a very small investment started selling in a niche market at the beginning of December. I'm doing better than when I first started and so I'm encouraged to invest more in supplies and better lighting equipment because I'm wasting too much time on photos! I like etsy too and keep it as my homepage to give me that creative jolt everyday. However, I haven't really got everything I'm planning on doing there up and running yet because I'm still getting organized with my other venture.

Here's a link to a blog that focuses on finding niche markets on ebay that I stumbled upon in my quest. http://theauctionrebel.com/
I think he does a good job of thinking outside the box although I'm not selling anything he talks about.

BTW, I'm sorry that I can't go into specifics here with what I'm doing-hope you understand. HTH & Good Luck! :hi:

I share an office with my father. He's been in the business for 45 yrs. I've been around for 7yrs and just hired my first staff member, my goddaughter, she's 16 (old enough for me to avoid running afoul of child labor laws yet too young to sue me for paying her in candy)

292. It's a fun job
The only problems I've had are getting my dad away from using the pony express and learning how to use the fax machine. So far he's been resisting email and storing documents on the computer, but he has a wall full of awards and I don't, so maybe he's right.

67. Don't work
Edited on Tue Jan-22-08 01:38 PM by undergroundpanther
I am disabled. PSTD. But not working has given me time to think, observe changes around me,ponder and ask questions most people who do work never get around to asking or noticing.
I think it is one reason why I post what I post here, among other reasons.

I have learned to manage my own time, something that retirees seem to find burdens them, once they leave their jobs. I have learned to lead myself and not wait for someone else to tell me what to do with my time, my skills or myself. I make my own decisions and live with the consequences.I have thought through and formed my own value system.
I have a strong inner locus of control. I have time to help.
Working people might resent me or others might paint me into a monster but I know they don't know what they are talking about concerning me.Poverty bashing among other types of bashing over things people cannot help or are victimized by either directly or indirectly pisses me off. Because in the case of poverty ,when poverty being seen as a personal or moral failure in this culture and not a systemic failure , that does not allow the poor person to be a human being first.

Because I don't work,I am traumatized, I am poor and I am gifted this carries it's own special misery, to ease that misery I have had time to seek knowledge and to teach myself a lot of stuff and explore myself.Time to observe and process information and events as slow as I need to to come to an understanding I can bear.In a strange way I consider myself lucky and unlucky at the same time if that makes any sense.

185. yeah..
but organizing my thoughts into a book is really intimidating because my thoughts are fast and it is very hard to keep them in a legible format. I need help to do it.Someone to help me organize and stay motivated.. As for marketing the book forget it.I'm not a good sales type.
I do art but making the same things day after day because that's what sells would quickly turn my survival outlet into a curse. I try to think out pro and cons about work and right now the pros are more trouble than they are worth.

I sell ad space in trade publications for various trade shows. I spend my days manipulating corp gatekeepers and various members of their staff to give me the names of their CEO's CFO's Presidents Mktg directors etc, and then try to get them on the phone and get money from them. I get to be a total and complete a-hole to people that spend their days having their asses kissed. I like it ;) Though if I can get off my ass and get my MBA I would like to be a Mktg Director in a few years.

77. Freelance writer...
Former starving reporter who crossed to the dark side for the corporate bucks.

For money, I'm a corporate slut and crank out PR and marketing copy. I used to be a corporate flack some time back, so clients occasionally want me to do press outreach as well as writing, but that's increasingly rare.

For far less money, I write political/social criticism and occasional satires attacking conservative ideology, corporate criminality, religious insanity and pop culture idiocy. These articles show up all over progressive sites and occasionally make it into print. I'm an equal opportunity pest, detest the status quo and truly believe in afflicting the comfortable.

80. I Help (Small, Disadvantaged, Women/Minority/Veteran/Service Disabled Veteran) Co's...
... with their business development, by helping them to identify, target, market to, and propose on, competitive contracts let to bid by local, State, Federal, and International Agency entities.

It's fun, rewarding, creative, can be done from home mostly even when I'm flat on my back with Crohn's, and overcomes boredom (tight, quick deadlines, new subject matter spanning just about every imaginable agency type).

The company I'm with is terrific about empowering its employees to telecommute, especially if there is a medical issue. We do lots of defense work, work for education agencies, and some really arcane stuff too. It's the perfect blend of private sector solutions to public problems (lots of technology solutions involved).

Where are you located?

91. why do you want to know?
the more information available to be data mined about the poster, the less honest they can be about their private views and actions, and the less effective they can be politically

people should not be revealing private job information, it's just plain stupid in a country that is moving more and more toward an authoritarian gov't

people can be easily controlled when their job is at risk and it just ain't that easy to get another one

Great business, with cool as shit owners, good clients, I really love my job. It was something totally out of my ken and I originally applied for a job at the owners wine biz here in Sonoma County CA, but they saw something in me and asked if I would like to try this gig. It helped that my sister and the owners Lori and Bill are best friends, family helped me out here. Lori and her husband are big proponents of hiring friends and family. There are two married couples who work there, one engaged couple, Lori's son, her Mom, an aunt and niece, and various friends of Bill and Lori. It is a good mix and we all bust our butts for Lori and Bill. I am very fortunate. Good to see you Hissy.

..after health insurance costs. The restaurant I work for is independent and the owner is a liberal, but apparently he doesn't believe in paying his employees a living wage. Can YOU live on 250 bucks every two weeks? What sacrifices would you have to make?

It's okay, though - I'm going to school full-time and am also doing an internship. By June, I should be able to lift myself out of food service and finally be able to pay my rent AND the bills every month. I realize not everyone has that luxury, though - that's why I'm a liberal in the first place (a rising tide lifts all boats and all that stuff)

286. Not surprised at the salaries
By your location, I can guess the company, though I won't post it on here.... I've worked in the insurance industry most of my life, mostly at financial reporting & accounting.

But, I used to prepare a report for my old company that was required by the state of NY that would list everybody in the company with a salary of over $60K per year - it was a huge list. But, I remember seeing what some of the top people made and it left me shaking my head - especially since we were paying people big bucks even after they left the company (like Bill Clinton's original AG nominee...)

I was actually the only person in the company that had all that info at their fingertips because they had a de-centralized HR at the time and I had to consolidate the results from several areas of the company.

Worked here for over 6 years and have risen to a 'management' position. That is to say, I'm in charge of wait staff during the day and also manage all banquets. I strive to allow 'my staff' to see what needs to be done and then allow them to 'oversee' and act upon those needs. Does it always happen? No, but most of the time, my professional staff does what's required with little supervision from myself.

268. CAD drafter / Graphic Designer
I work in the sales department for the Feed-Biofuels division of a large international corporation.

In addition to drafting using AutoCad and Inventor, I'm also assisting in the design and production of sales literature - although the entire design/production of the literature will soon be turned over to me.

we make the machines that pelletizes raw materials such as grains, switchgrass, woodchips, sawdust

the Feed-Biofuel division was spun off from another division a few months ago - so there's lots to do to get it up on it's feet.

I'm also in the middle of desigining/creating a database for various proposal data, and redesigning the format of production flow diagram.

with the oil/energy crunch being a long term problem worldwide - it's expected the pelletizing of raw materials for heat usage to go up, additionally, the machines also pelletize plastics, organic waste and other recycleables.

Pelletizing or pelletising is the process of compressed or molding of product into the shape of a pellet. A large range of different products are pelletized including chemicals, iron ore, animal compound feed, and more.

Pelletizing of iron ore produces spheres of typically 8 to 18 mm diameter. The process combines agglomeration and thermal treatment to convert the raw ore into pellets with characteristics appropriate for use in a blast furnace.

Pelletizing of animal feeds can result in pellets from 1.2mm (Shrimp feeds), through to 3-4mm (Poultry feeds) up to 8-10mm (Stock feeds). The Pelletizing of stockfeed is done with the pellet mill machinery, which is done in a feed mill.)

302. Marketing for a small local property management company
It's great - bank holidays off, normal first shift hours, plenty of autonomy, getting to come home for lunch, and spending most of the day driving around by myself listening to the radio.

I take pictures and virtual tours of properties for the website and put up and take down signs and supra locks and occasionally check keys and leave keys for the natural gas company and check on properties for the property managers.

306. Marketing and PR Director for a mid-sized manufacturer
One of the few in the country that still makes a product that is 90%+ American made. We deal in many markets, with a core focus on the energy market.

Things are getting tight though with a lot of increased pressure from the junk Chinese manufacturers and offshoring to reduce cose from other manufacturers here and in the EU.
