Today was my last day in the US Army
Approximately six months ago I was informed that because of my PTSD, neck and head injuries and chronic migraines (all because of my two combat tours of Iraq) I was going in front of a medical board. At the time I was crushed and all that I had worked for was now gone. I was asking myself, how can you take a soldier who gave everything (except his breathing) for this country and make him worse? That's the way I felt back then. In 15 minutes I will officially be a civilian and my time in service will be over. I leave this army as a 32 year old medical retiree with full benefits and pay for life. Hundreds of your private messages helped me through these hard times.

Thank you DU.

SSG C

You have a lot to be proud of. And we are proud of you, too. I hope you get better. With God's help, and the help of some good Democrats committed to getting one of our own in office, our vets may FINALLY get the care they so richly deserve.

Take care, buddy. It's good to have you back. :pals:

16. seeing some old 3rd ID vets
it reminded me of something that happened the other day. I was in a convenience store and this homeless veteran comes up to me crying after seeing my 3rd ID combat patch. He said it reminded him of the days when he was just a private, newly married with a baby on the way. Then the war happened, the wife was gone and he keeps fighting same battles over and over each night in his car. He was B 3-15 for all you 3rd ID vets out there. Audie Murphy's old unit I believe

Whichever one it was, Audie Murphy's old unit was posted on the same kasern with me in Kitzingen, Germany back in the late '80's and early '90's.

36. Thank You for the Bravery of This Post
"Approximately six months ago I was informed that because of my PTSD, neck and head injuries and chronic migraines (all because of my two combat tours of Iraq) I was going in front of a medical board."

Thank you for your service. Equally, thank you for speaking out about the full range of your service-related injuries.

"At the time I was crushed and all that I had worked for was now gone. I was asking myself, how can you take a soldier who gave everything (except his breathing) for this country and make him worse? That's the way I felt back then."

Were you Reserve, Guard, Regular Army, or ... ??? There are a number of little-known, poorly-publicized, but very helpful transition services available for both the returning service member and his/her family members.

"In 15 minutes I will officially be a civilian and my time in service will be over. I leave this army as a 32 year old medical retiree with full benefits and pay for life. Hundreds of your private messages helped me through these hard times."

Thank you, so much, for your service. If you don't know about the NMFA (National Military Family Association), here's the http://www.nmfa.org">link.

49. Welcome home Brother. You may be leaving the Army, but
you will carry your comrades with you all your life.

I got out in 1969 (USASA) and I get over 100 e-mails a day, occasional phone calls and visits, from some of the craziest, most wonderful guys one could ever hope to have as friends.
(Read about them in Chapter 10 of Michela Wrong's "I Didn't Do it For You.") In the Army I made lifelong friends, and you will will too. You will find that those friends are greater than gold.

If you go into a funk, think of those true friends. Give them a call or an e-mail. You will find that there will always be someone who will love you as a brother and will have your back the rest of your life.

You will soon find that "Fuck You" is a term of endearment.

Welcome home

51. Our group of vets is special in that we cannot speak of any on the job
details. There is one aspect of our lives that we will take to our graves. Our war stories are usually about our off base exploits or life on base. If we do speak of work it is about stunts and asshole trick chiefs.

56. So what's your theme song? When I was discharged from the Navy it was
Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone"

Once upon a time you dressed so fine
You threw the bums a dime in your prime, didn't you?
People'd call, say, "Beware doll, you're bound to fall"
You thought they were all kiddin' you
You used to laugh about
Everybody that was hangin' out
Now you don't talk so loud
Now you don't seem so proud
About having to be scrounging for your next meal.

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be without a home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?

You've gone to the finest school all right, Miss Lonely
But you know you only used to get juiced in it
And nobody has ever taught you how to live on the street
And now you find out you're gonna have to get used to it
You said you'd never compromise
With the mystery tramp, but now you realize
He's not selling any alibis
As you stare into the vacuum of his eyes
And ask him do you want to make a deal?

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?

You never turned around to see the frowns on the jugglers and the clowns
When they all come down and did tricks for you
You never understood that it ain't no good
You shouldn't let other people get your kicks for you
You used to ride on the chrome horse with your diplomat
Who carried on his shoulder a Siamese cat
Ain't it hard when you discover that
He really wasn't where it's at
After he took from you everything he could steal.

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?

Princess on the steeple and all the pretty people
They're drinkin', thinkin' that they got it made
Exchanging all kinds of precious gifts and things
But you'd better lift your diamond ring, you'd better pawn it babe
You used to be so amused
At Napoleon in rags and the language that he used
Go to him now, he calls you, you can't refuse
When you got nothing, you got nothing to lose
You're invisible now, you got no secrets to conceal.

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?

63. HOLY CRAP... LOOK AT THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!
First of all - I completely appreciate you & your fellow soldiers for all of what you have been doing in Iraq. What you put yourself through every day that you were over there is priceless, and very much appreciated.

However.. in another link I had stared - I'd asked for some links to Conservative websites like DU that the Repugs visit.

I actually found a site - that links to stories HERE.. and slams people. Not surprising.. but your story made it to their forum. Very sad: http://www.conservativescave.com/index.php?topic=604.0

65. yeah I see
If they had read other posts in "my journal" that would have answered all their questions.
I personally don't come here to do anything but to thank those who have helped me get through this.

67. For DUumpster readers
I'm here to answer your questions too

1. (franksolich)
"Not to sound mildly dubious, but why would a 500-posts primitive get "hundreds" of personal messages from primitives, given that it takes thousands of posts to gain credibility among the unwashed?"

Maybe because I was a member from day one. If you click on my profile you can see I was a member since 2001.

2. TheSarge

"That being said...if this guys really was in the military and really is having problems with PTSD I hope he gets help. The screening process is getting better...but too many soldiers are still fudging on their post deployment questionaires for whatever reason."

Thank you. I'm trying.

3. VelvetElvis
"As an active duty soldier, if he used his 500 posts to bash the military, Chimpy, and America, that woulda done the trick.

But they do so support the troops, doncha know."

Half of these users are veterans. No I didn't rant against the military or America. Satisfied?

4. MPCOA
"I'm not buying it

PTSD, Head, Neck, and migraines because of two tours?
If you were to really have the physical injuries why not state what actually caused it, like my truck got blown up and I was thrown into the roof?"

Head - combination of being blown up three times and wearing all the gear.
Head - Same (add some depleted uranium from OIF I and you're lucky to only end up with migraines)
PTSD - Do I really have to say it?

5. Uhhuh35
"I work with a former Marine who had a tour in Iraq and he has similar injuries. The difference is most of the vets I know are resistant to be tagged with PTSD because they view it as a sort of "scarlet letter". They don't want others to be thinking they're gonna' "wig out" or something."

Which I did for years. Read my previous posts in a journal. I guess you can't hide this "scarlet letter" forever.

6. MPCOA

"This guys post just doesn't add up to me, he is either lying or not giving the whole story. I have known lots of guys who downplayed to stay in and ones to make up the catchalls to get out."

How's the view of the war from your TV set?

And thank you for your service. We are proud of you and your fellow soldiers. (We're not proud of Dick Cheney and GWB who abused your trust and ours to start this illegal war.)

70. I Had Similar Feelings When I Was Forced To Retire from the Fire Service
I had an injury on a medic call that was made worse by rushing back to work, not getting proper physical therapy because my male therapist could not envision a female being a firefighter, a subsequent injury due to careless driving on another medic call....all which resulted in my shoulder needing reconstructive surgery.....I was told after surgery and 9 months of PT that we have enough guys around here with physical problems, we don't need you too - just retire. I was very angry for quite sometime, but now I just enjoy getting my pension checks. I wish I could give you a hug.

72. We're in a similar situation.
I'm in the Air Force and waiting for the results of a medical board. Also have PTSD, and reach 17 years of service this spring. Just hoping they don't give me a gold watch and kick me in the butt...

17 years of service? You're getting the raw end of the deal. Just deny and appeal or at least make it temporary so you can get those 3 years and retire with full pension.

75. Hopefully it will be a medical retirement
The past few days my mind has been flooded with thoughts to my hometown (Arlington, VA). I'd like to get a Gov't job with the skills I've learned in the AF and be a double-dipper.

Was your medical retirement effective immediately? Last summer that happened to a civilian in the office.

79. I read the regulation about it,
and quickly drowned in information. Perhaps each service does it their way. I've got over 30 days of leave; I guess that I should burn it soon. Selling leave isn't that good of an option. If I take regular (not terminal) leave I'll still get separate rations and a housing allowance (live off-base).

Any advice is greatly appreciated.
