What is wrong with "Kumbaya"? Nothing
new about the concept of "one America"-

when Clinton says it~

Us and Them
"For too long we've been told about 'us' and 'them.'
Each and every election we see a new slate of arguments
and ads telling us that 'they' are the problem, not 'us.'
But there can be no 'them' in America. There's only us."

Inaugural Address of United States President
William J. Clinton

1. Thank you for reminding us of this quote.
Edited on Fri Jan-11-08 06:18 PM by Big Blue Marble
It was true then and it is ten times more true now after 16 years of divisive Republican "leadership"
The divisions between us only serve to strengthen the powerful interests that know if they keep us fighting
with each other, we will not notice when they strip our country of its wealth and democracy.

2. Thomas Jefferson said the same thing "We are all Federalists. We are all Republicans."
I don't think I WOULD want a Democratic president that treated Republicans as poorly as George W. has treated our party, frankly.

5. Here's what's wrong with Kumbaya
It doesn't blow anything up. And though Kumbaya might have some religious significance to some minor cult, it has no relevance whatsoever to the True American Religion of the Myth of Redemptive Violence. That is, there is nothing so bad, nothing so awful, nothing so damaging to America that it can't be resolved through the application of violence: Dropping bombs, killing brown people, and sending the military hither and yon to protect American interests.

Does Kumbaya kill anyone or blow anything up? It does not. That's what's wrong with it, and if you don't believe me, just keep an eye on the popular media, where people who like Kumbaya are routinely ridiculed, but never invited on.

8. well
You just spoke elequently on what is so good/redeeming/promising about "Kumbaya"- IMO.

We've spent eternity doing it the kill 'em all way.
And still here we are.
Something has to change.

I walk down the road, I come upon a hole, and I fall in- I walk down the road I come upon a hole I fall in-
I walk down the road and I'm pissed that I keep falling in so I blow up the road, and now I have a bigger hole than ever-

How about we take a walk down the road, and when we see the hole, we build a bridge, or fill in the hole, or _______?

Thanks Gratuitous~

and thinks that it can all be swept under the rug and we can pretend that it's all in the past or at least that if it still exists it just exists in "certain areas" because hey, I have a black friend and my boss at work is a chick, so things are groovy.

9. no- denial isn't the same-
I'm well acquainted with denial. I was born into that state. And fed at the table of pretend.

The difference between denial and working towards unity is that denial in this context is separate and un-equal. Status quo-

Unity involves risking. Taking chances. Reaching out, and stretching through your fear.

I'm not naive Sleebarker.

I understand the mind-set that you are describing- but the "Kumbaya" that I'm seeking is much more meaningful. And worth really striving toward.

peace~
