I've thought for a while now that one of the major strengths of DU is its strong moderation. I like the fact that right-wing viewpoints are not allowed and the management makes no apologies for that. Strong community management and commitment to the founder's vision keeps a site like this healthy. I've seen the effects of trying to be too inclusive and too lenient first-hand on my own message boards. Most of them no longer exist, because they were torn apart by trolling and infighting.
4. Yes. At Barcop's forum we used to have a special unmoderated forum where freepers could thrive.
And thrive they did. It was a nightmare. Hate speeches. Death threats on "libruls." Pretty much like the real FR, but no RimJob to delete the voices of sanity.
One night the Forum's founder had a few beers and deleted the room.
7. The Mods are the reason DU is still here, I think
around the time I discovered DU in earl 2003, I was going to other political discussion boards, and threatened and dissed simply because of my username. Those other boards are long gone. DU is still here because the mods (who are great) take care of the trolls and keep the progressives civil.
8. Yes, but I'd rather not. Thank you, Mods! I used to moderate
a diabetes forum and even that got insane sometimes (I never want to hear the word "A*****) again as long as I live) but that was nothing compared to this place.
