Have you had the adult recommended Tdap shot?

Advisory Committee on Immunization Practice Recommends Adult Vaccination with New Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis Vaccine (Tdap)

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) at its recent meeting (October 26 and 27) in Atlanta, voted to recommend that adults from 19 to 64 years of age be vaccinated with a newly licensed adult booster tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine (Tdap).

Under the ACIP recommendation, the Tdap vaccine would replace the currently recommended tetanus-diphtheria vaccine that is used as the adult booster vaccine. The new vaccine helps protect adults from pertussis, an illness with severe and prolonged cough. It also reduces the risk of transmitting pertussis to infants.

The ACIP recommended that adults receive a booster dose of Tdap vaccine against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis if they have not received a tetanus and diphtheria (Td) booster dose in ten or more years. Adults should receive a single dose of Tdap to replace a single dose of Td. Pertussis affects an estimated *600,000 adults every year, aged 20 to 64 years, and can result in weeks of coughing, cracked ribs from severe coughing spells, pneumonia, and other complications.

http://www.cdc.gov/od/oc/media/pressrel/r051109.htm

I believe that the 600,000 adults must be an international figure as CDC records for the US do not correlate.
I imagine health care workers have had theirs? I have not had mine, but if I had an infant I might consider it.

Edited to add date.

21. Didn't take long for an alert DUer to pick up on that one!
I think Raising Arizona was my initiation into Cohen Brothers films. I love it...it's one of those movies I can watch over and over and over and still laugh out loud.

22. Me too.
I love it every time I see it. So much so that when it is on I giggle in anticipation of the scenes I find amusing. There are very few movies that do that to me. There is just something precious and charming and very funny about this movie.

Loved Raising Arizona and I too still laugh out loud when I catch that movie. My all time favorite movie would have to be Fargo. As a Minnesotan, that one has a special place in my heart.

But I am immunized against smallpox. How many 32 y.o. can say that?

Seriously, though, thanks for the word. I travel a great deal in the third world and tetanus is a *bit* of an issue.

7. They never could smallpox to take on me
Every time they gave me the vaccination-nothing. In the Air Force they gave it to me 5 times before deciding I had a natural immunity-good genes I guess. The only shot I ever reacted to was the plague-my immune system said I recognize this bug and I don't want any part of it. Never had the mumps even though both my brothers and sister had it. My mother never had it either even though out of 400 kids in her school 390 had the mumps during an outbreak.

19. I have had it twice too with no reaction
My last time was 6 years ago for my job (31 at the time). At least my doc felt my lymph nodes and decided I was reacting to the vaccine but had a natural immunity. Accelerated immunity I think he called it. Sorry they made you go through it so much. Thats not a fun vaccine.:( My dad told me he was the same way- no scar.

11. Flu shots are preserved with thimerosal
Edited on Wed Feb-21-07 09:55 AM by leftyclimber
If you're allergic to it, you'll be sick as hell. Back in the stone age, when I got my first and only flu shot, I was told as long as I wasn't allergic to eggs I could have a flu shot. Got it, was stay-in-bed sick for a week.

Even better, gamma globulin has thimerosal in it, or did last time I checked into getting a shot for travel purposes. So if there's a hepatitis outbreak, I'm SOL.

Edit: if we're within 10 years of our last round of inoculations, do we need another round?

10. I had one last year.
I work for my internist, and while using a mechanical pencil, managed to stab myself with it (don't ask how...I still don't know how I did it!). Part of the pencil stayed in my finger. So, as I could not recall when I'd last had a Tetanus vaccination (no doubt it was in my teens, a long, long time ago) my doctor gave me the DTP vaccination.

Our doctors only give the DTP; no Tetanus-only vaccine.

This article helps to explain why we sometime have adults inquiring about the vaccine without having had any injury. :hi:

12. It's funny how few people seem aware of this?
Given that most in our generation have had a vaccine vs. the disease, a booster is logical. I expect we'll see more adult booster recs. in the future?

24. Pertussis on the rise again:
http://www.nurseweek.com/news/Features/04-11/Clinical_Pertussis.asp

What they don’t know is, despite high vaccination rates, immunity wanes after five to 10 years, leaving adolescents, adults, and unimmunized infants open to contracting the infection.1 When they care for patients with an illness characterized by a prolonged cough, they should explore the possibility of pertussis.

This may deserve it's own thread?

That vaccine hasn't been tested long enough. It's probably some giant FDA conspiracy to brainwash us.

Plus, I wouldn't want adults to get the idea that they can just go around stepping on rusty nails.

Edited on Wed Feb-21-07 01:43 PM by mzmolly
is a sexually transmitted disease. Pertussis is another matter. And, if you promote vaccines for children it seems to me you should practice what you preach? Of course if you were not aware, that's understandable. But, now you are. ;)

33. Actually, Molly...
like I said in that thread last night, if you remember, I recently went in for my tetanus booster, and I assume it was this one. You'll have to ask my doctor if you want to confirm that.

As for HPV, it's a lot easier to catch than either tetanus or pertussis. So if one's going to preach vaccines for the latter they should be preaching vaccines for the former. And I don't see why one would harp on HPV being an STD, other than them having some sort of hang up over sexuality.

37. HPV has many strains. So, let's look at cervical cancer rates.
Incidence (annual) of Cervical Cancer: 13,000 annual cases in USA > http://www.wrongdiagnosis.com/c/cervical_cancer/stats.htm

Pertussis cases were totaled around 25,000 cases in 2005. Granted the pertussis number is likely greatly under reported.

This recommendation comes to you from the same administration that:

2. Somehow forgot to provide decent care to wounded veterans returning from Iraq.

3. Lied in order to send troops to Iraq.
