6. My friend, I think the actual name of the tune is "Garryowen." Don't know why
or how it came to be the one word, but that's the way I've always seen it titled, when I used to play Irish and bluegrass music.

Now you've got me going; the tune is in my head and I'm off to play it on the banjo.

7. It is an Irish song, but in the 1st CAV it is "GARY OWEN!"
Beware the difference.

15. I always thought Gary Owen was claimed by the 7th Cav?
And that song was chosen by Custer, himself.

In fact, here's the regimental crest for the 7th Cav

From The Institute of Heraldry:

" “Gary Owen” is the name of a song which became a favorite of General Custer and once was used as a battle song in the Indian Wars."

18. Not quite.
Currently, the 1st Squadron is in the 1st Brigade of the 1st Cavalry Division. The 2nd Battalion is assigned to the 4th Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, as a combined arms battalion. The 1st Squadron is stationed at Fort Hood, Texas and the 2nd Battalion at Fort Bliss, Texas.

The 3rd Squadron is part of the 2nd Brigade of the 3rd Infantry Division, while the 5th Squadron is part of the division's 1st Brigade. Both are based at Fort Stewart in Georgia. The 4th Squadron is part of the 1st Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, stationed at Camp Hovey, South Korea.

20. Well things must have changed a bunch since I was in I guess
I was in the 2nd of the 12th Cav (1st Air Cav) and at that time 1st of the 7th and 2nd of the 7th were a vital part of our operations along with the 1st of the 5th and 2nd of the 5th. The only one to sort of stand out on it's own was the 9th which was still considered a troop, but still in 1st Air Cav. I am not sure what you are talking about with squadrons. We didn't have any such critter when I was a part of it..
