Iraq's anti-corruption board revealed on Saturday that there were five million Iraqi orphans as reported by official government statistics, urging the government, parliament, and NGOs to be in constant contact with Iraq's parentless children.

"The government should set up an institutional or legislative program to help the Iraqi orphans. Iraqi is an oil-rich country and it is not acceptable that its orphans remain groaning in this tragedy," the anti-corruption board chief, Moussa Faraj, said during a conference in Baghdad dedicated to orphans in Iraq.

"The board on its own cannot meet the Iraqi orphans' needs, but there should be an organization or even a ministry to provide care for orphans," he said.

The Iraqi parliament's women & family committee had proposed a draft law to set up a fund for the orphans.

3. Then there are the "uprooted" and "resettled" ones....
Real safe place we've created there. Orphaned, "uprooted", or "resettled". Nice options :sarcasm:

UNHCR resettles over 20,000 Iraqi refugees in 2007

"A total of 14,798 files have been submitted to the United States, while Australia (1,796), Canada (1,512), Sweden (938), and New Zealand (266) are also among the top five receiving countries.
<snip>

By December 1, a total of 4,575 Iraqis had actually left for resettlement countries, Cochetel indicated, adding, "UNHCR has consistently encouraged resettlement countries to speed up their procedures to enable the most vulnerable Iraqis to depart as soon as possible."

"UNHCR estimates there are still some 80,000 to 100,000 extremely vulnerable Iraqi refugees in the Middle East in need of resettlement. There are several categories of people considered for resettlement, including torture victims; women at risk; urgent medical cases; female-headed households; members of minority groups, and others," the report explained.

"More than 4.5 million Iraqis are currently uprooted – 2.4 million inside Iraq and nearly 2.2 million outside – most of them in Syria and Jordan," it added.

Baghdad, Dec 13, (VOI) - Unlike orphans in many countries in the world, most Iraqi orphans lost their parents around the same time and under horrible circumstances. In addition to their desire for compassion and care, those children need to overcome their sad memories and make a new beginning in life.
Recounting her traumatic memories, Halima, a nine-year-old girl who is living in a public orphanage, said that she lost her parents in a blast that ripped through a local market in a Baghdad neighborhood.
"We were shopping in a popular market in Baghdad al-Jadida neighborhood when a car bomb detonated. I still recall how bodies turned into charcoal," Halima told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).
"I was taken to the hospital for treatment and was told that my parents were killed. My younger brother survived and was adopted by a loving family. It was my relatives who brought me to this orphanage," the girl added.
"Our problem here is that we do not receive academic education. If only the government could build special schools for us to guarantee our future," she said.
