Captain America versus the Red Skull
Edited on Sat Dec-01-07 05:16 PM by Old Crusoe
This is another of my anti-Rudy Giuliani posts.

Once a Democrat, it was as if it had been in a previous political life. He shed that skin to run for Mayor of New York, and eventually served two terms there -- many say not very graciously or judiciously.

If you haven't seen the documentary GIULIANI TIME, now's the time to see it.

Guiliani reminds me of the Red Skull, the WWII nemesis of Captain America. An older cousin recommended Captain America comics from the Silver Age Marvel group generally and the Red Skull episodes especially.

"The Red Skull is one mean son-of-a-bitch," my cousin explained. "Cruelty on two legs."

The same description works for me with Giuliani, and the two bear a surprising physical similarity as well. There's a bone-bred element to Giuliani that suggests the absence of understanding or compassion. I sense in him only a lust for control, specifically to be the lone authoritarian control of others no matter the particulars of others' plight, circumstance, experience, or point of view.

His polling began on a very positive note earlier this year, as many voters recognized him as the stalwart hero of 9/11. But time fades away, as the song goes, and the luster of that champion is increasingly dulled.

His troubles abound. He's no great speaker on his feet. His city's fire fighters hate his guts. His pal Bernie Kerik's a slimeball. His children won't speak to him. His wife tortures dogs.

His own campaign strategists have told him to skip Iowa altogether. Next, they told him to not expect much in New Hampshire either, to concentrate on South Carolina where he had a substantial lead.

He no longer has that substantial lead. Romney is stronger than ever there, with Huck charging on the inside rail. Giuliani's lead is threatened and will arguably be extinguished if he loses both Iowa and New Hampshire, which now seems certain. He would then stumble into Feb. 5th with reduced rationale, grievous baggage, and negative momentum.

I don't care who he marries, or how many times, or who he shared an apartment with in NYC. I don't like his pandering to the fundie nutbags and I don't like his back-alley beat-em-up macho bullshit.

I hope he's gone from the mix early, and by crushing margins. I always rooted for Captain America anyway, but against the Red Skull, it immediately became a high-stakes matter.

1. Goodness, O C...
I actually had fun reading that.

And "fun" has been pretty elusive for me of late.

2. Tom! There you are. Always a pleasure to cross paths with you.
It isn't fair that fun has been in short supply for you of late because for some time now you've been the source of significant fun and insight on these boards.

May the Fates get their heads out of their hindends and send some good vibes your way.

8. I did see MALLRATS but had forgotten that line.
To me, Giuliani is modeled after the Red Skull.

9. You shouldn't insult the Red Skull that way!
I hear he's got a nasty temper.
No, cruel and evil as he was, the Skull was an honest NAZI.
His fascism was out in the open.
Ghouliani's is hidden under his Corset Jacket.

11. Agree that the Red Skull was a more cogent personality, although his affiliations
with the Nazis and the Third Reich were abominable.

It wasa clear choice to root for Captain America against Red Skull.

I think you're right -- Red Skull probably does have a nasty temper, one I don't want to provoke.

10. Check out Brubaker's Captain America (current run)
It's excellent and ties into your Cap/Red Skull analogy.

Great essay!

12. Thank you, Feron. Are you talking about the current issue on stands now?
Edited on Sat Dec-01-07 07:46 PM by Old Crusoe
It's been a while since I bought a comic book.

But there's a comics store in town, so I'm sure I can round it up.

Thank you for the tip.

13. Last call for the idea that The Red Skull is the prototype for Rudy Guiliani.
