Tomatoes ... from an apple tree?
Couple enjoy unexpected crop

SANTA FE SPRINGS - Ray Stanton went out to his back yard in August to see if any apples were growing on his tree.

What he found was another fruit.

It was red and round in shape, but not the apples Stanton's been eating.

Instead, there were about six vines with cherry tomatoes sprouting from them.

"I don't know how this happened," said Stanton, 89, who planted the tree about 15 years ago.

He and his wife, Anzo, 89, pick the ripened tomatoes and use them in salads and other meals.

This is not an uncommon occurrence, according to Cal Poly Pomona's plant science department.

It attributes the phenomenon to a bird or other animal "planting" the tomato seed.
