DEMS Have An Alternative-Recognize Growing Disaster Of Pelosi's "Off The Table" Position
Dennis Kucinich: Standing Tall in the House as Cheney Impeachment Bill Advances
By Dave Lindorff
...............

Republicans clearly don’t want impeachment hearings, but have recognized something that the Democratic leadership, lame and tactically deficient as it is, does not, namely that particularly among Democratic voters and Democratic-leaning voters, impeachment is enormously popular. According to polls, some three in four Democrats, and a majority of all Americans, favor impeaching the vice president (a majority of Americans also favor impeaching President Bush). As long as the Democratic Party leaders keep blocking impeachment, they lose support and anger voters among this group. Clearly Republicans saw a chance today to further alienate those voters by forcing the Congressional Democratic leadership, which has stalled Kucinich’s bill for over six months since it was filed last April 24, to more actively and visibly block it.

But Democratic leaders have an alternative. They can recognize the growing disaster of Pelosi’s “impeachment is off the table” position—which has contributed significantly to Congress’ record-low poll ratings (now well below Bush’s)--and can turn around and get those impeachment hearings going.

If they were to do this, with just a year to go until the presidential election, they would electrify progressive voters and independent-minded voters, who are frightened and disgusted by what this administration has been doing to the country and to the Constitution.

I was just at a polling station today in my Republican-leaning area (Montgomery County, PA), and when a Republican activist standing outside the polling center saw my “Impeach Bush and Cheney” T-shirt, he said, “It would be great for Republicans too, if they could dump both those guys.”

Clearly, the public, even including many Republicans, wants Congress to act.

4. I think your right,
if only the Leadership would see it and get all the mileage they can out of it. My guess is that their approval rating would jump sky high if they would seriously push Cheney's impeachment.

6. I'm FULLY convinced that our Democratic Leadership in Congress are divorced from their constituents.
Edited on Tue Nov-06-07 06:11 PM by ShortnFiery
They are operating now with NO accountability ... they're arrogant and independent.

Welcome to a Plutocracy. The only way to counter these CORRUPT STOOGES is to *not vote for them* in their next democratic primary. If every damn election is NOT Diebolded, these evil ghouls will catch on real fast that their constituency LOATHES THESE TREASONOUS PSEUDO DEMOCRATS.

Kick-out all the complacent and treasonous Congresspeople! ... With extreme prejudice. :grr:

7. So many republican voters are fed up
Ron Paul is making his mark with them, even attracting indies and Democrat voters as well.
and for myself in a closed primary state a registered independent must choose soon.

8. That was my suspicion too!
They must not like the corporations contributions going to the Dem Corporatists! So it was time for them to expose the Dem Corporatists for what they are to their voters to alienate the Dem voters against them, and perhaps from their perspective move the donations back to them as the true "Corporatist Party". Perhaps this will be the start of the fall of the DLC! One can only hope!

9. WTF does "off the TABLE" really mean?
Edited on Tue Nov-06-07 06:36 PM by SimpleTrend
Today, the motion to "TABLE" the bill was being hailed as the worst possible outcome, meaning it would no longer be considered.

So, did Pelosi speak with forked tounge? Before you get all mad at my putting it that way, does saying "impeachment is 'off the table'" mean the metaphorical 'will not consider' to the commoners(?), and to those in congress, it means 'it could be considered,' at some future time?

11. To me, I envision someone going through a stack of memos,
making a neat stack on the table of the memos to be addressed, and the ones that are "off the table" go into the circular file.

That's my analogy.

10. The Dems are Committing Political Suicide
The Dems are committing political suicide by continually putting a halt to impeachment, caving to Bush, and defending the corporations over the people. We are definitely living in a plutocracy. This past Friday, I heard a traditional conservative call the Ed Schultz show and express utter contempt for Bush/Cheney. There is massive support out there to get rid of these bastards, and not just amongst those of us on the left.

BTW: I am also a native of Montgomery County, PA. I was born and raised in Lansdale but have been living here in Maryland since I started my rotten job here in 1986. I still get up there, though, to visit my relatives.
