Duane "Dog" Chapman's tape-recorded tirade has cost him his TV show.

"Dog the Bounty Hunter" has been pulled off the air by A&E, the cable network announced Friday. The network stopped short of saying the show was canceled, apparently leaving open the possibility of a return with new episodes or reruns.

"In evaluating the circumstances of the last few days, A&E has decided to take Dog The Bounty Hunter off the network's schedule for the foreseeable future," A&E said in prepared statement. "We hope that Mr. Chapman continues the healing process that he has begun."

The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that Yum Brands, which advertised Taco Bell, KFC and Pizza Hut on "Dog the Bounty Hunter," had pulled all of its ads, calling Chapman's comments "despicable." ...

The Associated Press reported on Friday that Tucker Chapman taped the phone call with his father, and sold it to the National Enquirer, which posted the tape on its Web site on Wednesday.

1. I knew that losing the sponsors would do it!
I posted something about it earlier today when I heard that Yum Brands had dumped him.

They would over look the bigoted tirade if he was still found to be marketable, but when the money started to be pulled it was over for him.

He's dead to A&E now.

32. In a world where 24 hour news channels broadcast only the most sensational things
people feel inundated by crime and fear. In such a society a dominant theme becomes a desire to see crime punished. Take a look around at all the shows on the air dedicated to punishing or catching criminals. Its either crime based shows or reality shows at times. Thats what passes for entertainment in America these days.

6. HIS SON sold it to the Enquirer.
Edited on Sat Nov-03-07 01:31 AM by kgfnally
If anyone would know why his father deserved to be publicly slammed like this, it would be one of his children.

That one of his children felt it necessary shows how truly bad this guy's behavior has been, now and in the past. I think we can also assume his son's fkeelings toward his father, and again, his son is someone who would know better than any of us.

I think that might be why, but that's just me.

edit: And if his son taped the conversation in which the racist asshole used a slur in relation to his son's girlfriend, doesn't that mean that his son expected just such a slur to be used in the conversation, that he had the foresight to record it?

9. From what I gathered of the conversation
...he was angry because he wanted to be able to continue to use the 'n' word around the house, and was worried his son's girlfriend wouldn't take it well so she was uninvited. He had the logic right, he was just too full of himself to understand that he was the one who needed to adjust his attitude.

52. I think that when you say something in a PRIVATE phone call
to someone whom you can reasonably believe will not publicize the content of that PRIVATE conversation, it should be kept private. This was obviously a family matter and should have stayed there. Shame on his son for publicizing it, and shame on the network for cancelling his show.

Flame away.

21. I don't have a problem with Dog saying that stuff in private
Private conversations are just that. Though an instant celeb like him should be careful about what he says, even in private conversation.

However, in some cases, this kind of talk does become an issue. In the particular case below, it is a BIG FREAKIN' PROBLEM! And much bigger than Dog:

When Ohio officials shortchanged some African-American precincts of voting machines during the 2004 election, lines grew long and tempers short. But one person untroubled by events was John Tanner, the head of the voting branch in the Justice Department's civil rights division. He even wrote a letter to the Ohio officials defending the decision to send machines disproportionally to white precincts.

When, the following year, the Georgia Legislature passed a stringent voter ID law that would have effectively disenfranchised many poor people lacking driver's licenses, many lawyers in Tanner's office saw it as an effort to suppress minority voting. But not Tanner. He quickly decided not to challenge the law.

Despite these questionable actions, Tanner largely escaped notice until a recent conference in Los Angeles, where he opined that voter ID laws might disenfranchise elderly voters but not minorities, because they "don't become elderly the way white people do. They die first."

25. The reality of reality TV!
This is hilarious. He developed a tv personna, or rather schtick - born again Christian, compassionate with the criminals.

Now A&E is faced with his real person being smeared all over the media. Not only that - the guy's son is the one who busted him!!
A&E sure didn't plan on something like this sprouting from one of their reality shows.

With all the phony reality shows on tv now, this could get pretty entertaining. Family and estranged partners of all sorts using media to blow the cover of the reality stars.

29. where's that defender of "1st amendment rights" who wasn't happy w Phelps
lawsuit?

I actually used to like Dog, in a golly-gee aw shucks kind of way--he was doing a public service and was good at it, tracking down scumbags who jump bail and live in the community feeling free to be lawbreakers and unconscienable swine who cost people money b/c they're too irresponsible to face the music for their own crimes. Not to mention that they might also feel free to continue doing whatever it was they were busted for in the first place, whether dealing crack or stolen weapons or whatever. He was actually kind and compassionate to the people he brought in, looking out for their kids and trying to help them in other ways. His xtianity and uber-macho 80s throwback mulleted appearance were both kind of a joke, along with that picture of * in his office, but I thought he was an interesting character.

Having been married to a black person, though, I found his attitude about his son's girlfriend outrageous and disgusting. I was always happy that my family (lily white) always went way beyond race, it was never an issue or even noticed, even at extended family reunions. Must agree with poster somewhere above who says his son was wise to his shit and wanted him exposed.

33. He was basically calling his son's girlfriend a n**. If I was his son I would
be disgusted with him and want to sell him out for hurting the person I loved too. He didn't just say those things in a vacuum. He said them in response to a person who was or will be a member of the family.

I think he deserves everything he got.

Would find ourselves under the microscope of public scorn if someone made a tape or video recording of us at our worst? I'm not condoning the language he used but I bet if I asked for an honest show of hands about who here hasn't said something stupid or hurtful or even hateful in a moment of anger I'd be looking at a room of people with it's hands down.

47. True, but...
What you say is true, but I didn't hear a moment of anger in the recording, and that didn't sounds like what he was describing, either.

He was telling his son to ditch the girlfriend, because they "use that word" around there and he's not willing to lose everything because "some f*ing n* heard us say n*"

Apparently, "Hey, I know! Let's stop using that word!" was not an option.

I saw a few minutes of this freak on night when my wife fell asleep and the VCR tape she was watching ended and this show suddenly popped on the screen . all I needed was to see him and I guess his wife and shut it off .

I say glad it's gone but i just know someone will come up with some similar crap to take it's place .

I hate TV , I've hated it since the late 50's other than some movies on cable or a few other series .

No worries about a writers strike when it comes to most of this crap is there ?

45. Seems there are several issues here
#1. I never knew he was racist.

#2. From the few times I had seen his show there were no indications he felt that way.

#3. This only came to light via a private phone call that should be no one else's business.

#4. The call was sold to the Inquirer by his son. This is wrong on many levels. Dishonest, sleazy, greedy, and underhanded among other things.

#5. If not for that call there would be no issue.

#6. How do I not respect his privacy yet expect that mine will be respected?

#7. How chilling would it be for discourse if there were no private conversations?

To me this is less about what he said but that what he said in private was made public. To be clear I absolutely do not condone what he said, but no one should have to censure private speech.
