7. Hey, it's a historical structure. It is the height of environmental
appropriateness to buy an historical structure and then do environmental upgrades that improve its energy efficiency. Like Gore has done with the old house in TN that they own........

Time for a windmill and PV panels and solar hot water at the White House as far as I'm concerned. For security it ought to be totally off-grid.

19. yes -- seriously, if he's doing retrofitting, that's fine by me
Edited on Mon Oct-29-07 07:17 PM by Lisa
I know that much has been made of Bush's super-energy-efficient place in Crawford. But like it or not, most of us will have to figure out what to do with existing housing stock -- lacking the financial resources to just commission something brand-new. The houses we have now could well be with us until the middle or even end of the century. The Gores are trying to fix up an existing dwelling in Nashville. They will be learning a lot from this, and passing along the information to other people who are trying to figure out what to do with their homes.

The White House itself is a perfect example of that ... even with extensive upgrades, it has structural problems and is just not appropriate for current needs (not enough space for communications hardware, state dinners, and all the other functions it's supposed to fill). But they're dealing with it. (And if Gore were in there, he'd have some great ideas ... he was the one who installed the heat pump in the VP residence, way back.)

In fact, there should be a culture of architectural design that mandates green roofs.

36. Imagine
Imagine if Reagan hadn't took the whitehouse and Carter's efforts had been given a chance to work for the environment. Imagine the Soviet Union imploding on its own with no republican given phoney 'credit' for its gradual disintegration.

Imagine a media that didn't actively work to browbeat and tear up candidates seen as too kooky or liberal (though carter at the time was a bit on the conservative side of democrats-a funny commentary on how far we have swung to the right).

Imagine a world without an October surprise where Ollie North and the Iran Contra criminals all went to prison.

----

Or I suppose you could imagine a congress back in the 80's that decided to pursue impeachment for Iran Contra rather than letting that two bit phoney actor stay in power. Certainly cowardice didn't serve them well.

But hey, maybe just waiting Bush out will make everything good and happy this time!!!!

The house is not ostentatious, but before any decent person can occupy it, it will need to be fumigated.

There a lots of vermin in there now.
