They have always told us that there is too much partisanship in Washington. If only Republicans and Democrats would work together they could get so much accomplished we were told, but instead the pundits insisted that all we ever heard was partisan bickering. But what those same pundits rarely noted to us was that when bipartisanship did occur over the past few decades it often resulted in some of the worst abuses perpetrated on the American people by our Congress.
It was bipartisanship that brought us the Iraq massacre and its continued funding, it was bipartisanship that brought us the Patriot Act, it was bipartisanship that brought us NAFTA, it was bipartisanship that brought us the failed War on Drugs, it was bipartisanship that authorized Bush to wiretap phones without a warrant, it was bipartisanship that created a mostly car based transportation system that has made us extremely dependent on a cheap continuing supply of oil, it was bipartisanship that allowed the issue of global warming to take a back seat, it was bipartisanship that allowed tens of millions to go without health care, and it was bipartisanship that brought us the declaration of Iran's military as a terrorist group enabling Bush to use that as a pretext for a future war.
Bipartisanship has not only failed, but it has led this country into a deep abyss from which it is going to take an enormous amount of work to pull ourselves out of.
I wish we could one day we could see a healthy multi-party democracy in this country where multiple parties could work together for the common good, but even in such a society I could never recommend any political party working with the Republicans on anything.
The reality is that on every single issue that has brought any sort of debate whatsoever the Republicans have consistently been wrong every single time. The Democrats have a bit more mixed record, but there is usually a way to tell when they are right. If it is a situation in which the Democrats are taking a different position than the Republicans then their position is either right or at the very least a better position than the Republicans have. If they are voting with Republicans then they are very likely wrong. In other words Democrats are right when in they act in a partisan manner, it is when they practice bipartisanship that they vote for all the bullshit.
We have had enough of this bipartisanship, the Republican Party is the very definition of what is wrong in this world and we have no reason to work with them. Why the hell should we work with a group of people on insists on doing everything the wrong way? Why the hell should we work with a group of people who thinks the answer to all our world's problems is to bomb any country that we don't like? Why the hell should we work with people who deny global warming exists and refuse to take even the most modest of steps to cut back on pollution? Why the hell should we work with a group of people who rang up the largest deficit in history as they gave big handouts to corporations and claimed to be for fiscal responsibility? Why the hell should we work with a group of people who thinks that stopping gay marriage is more important than providing health care to every American? The Republican Party is wrong on literally every issue that is debated, and there is no reason to team up with people are wrong constantly. This is especially true when you are in the majority and the public is demanding an end to war and universal health care.
Maybe one day we can turn this country into a real democracy in which we can have more cross-party alliances, but in today's world we need an opposition party that will fight every step of the way. Bipartisanship is not going to get us out of the mess we are in, in fact it will only make the mess worse. We must turn this country around, and the only why to do that is by resisting those who are destroying this country. It is time for the Democrats to put an end to bipartisanship and stand up to defeat the agenda of George Bush and the Republican Party.
