OK, I admit it. I don't "get" Sarah Silverman.
She was interviewed on Fresh Air today and various clips from her new TV show were played. They made me cringe with their "look how outrageous I am" unfunniness. (Meanwhile, host Terry Gross was gushing about how hilarious the show is.) A tasteless bit making fun of homeless people was typical, and would fit right into that awful Fox Noise "comedy" show that got canceled.

This is so exciting. Was that incredible? Britney Spears, everyone. Wow, she is amazing. I mean, she is 25 years old, and she has already accomplished everything she’s going to accomplish in her life. It’s mind-blowing.

And she’s so grown up, she’s a mother. It’s crazy. It’s weird to think that just a few years ago on this very show, she was a sweet, innocent girl in slutty clothes writhing around with a python. No, that’s not nice calling Madonna a python.

But have you seen Britney’s kids? Oh, my God, they are the most adorable mistakes you will ever see. They are so cute. They are as cute as the hairless vagina they came out of. What? I’m serious, they’re this cute, you guys. {Imagine for yourself what she's doing.}

Wow, look at all the big stars here tonight. This is amazing. Paris, no Paris jokes tonight. I’m over that, I miss us. It’d be lame. And let me tell you something else. If you had any idea how much I misused all of my orifices in my early twenties, you would realize it was really the pot calling the kettle whorish, or whatever. That was not cool, at all.

(More here.)

Is this funny?

48. She is the funniest comdienne out there
Hilarious, edgy and everything, Her "Bit" is that she IS politically incorrect and self-centered but doesnt think that should bother anyone. I guess the same people that "didnt get" Archie Bunker wouldnt "get her". Its that type of humor.

Sarah is a little over the edge, if you ask me. Too explicitly sexually obsessed for my taste, and I misused a few orifices, too, in my 20s, so I'm no fundie.

69. Archie Bunker wasn't a comedian. He was a foolish charecter and fictional.

One is a real person. The other is imaginary.

Until you can tell the difference, maybe you shouldn't have cable.

Sara's bit is to poop and then try to look cute.

She isn't edgy.

Unless you think licking a dog's ass is edgy.

And if you do then I can tell you that Ren and Stimpy did it a decade ago.

110. And it's obvious she doesn't know how TO play it.
I've seen some of her show; she lacks the gravitas and presentation that made Carroll O'Connor succeed at playing a not dissimilar type of personality.

She's wooden, unconvincing, and probably believes the shtick on its own suffices to serve.

No, it doesn't.

but why post about it not being funny? Why not just watch it. I mean if she is doing something blatantly bigoted or cruel, I get the discussion. But a thread in GD about SS being not funny just seems ridiculous.

26. Hyperbole. Check.
We don't all have the same sense of humor. One person's funny is another person's cruelty and/or poor taste.

There are two kinds of humor. One kind that makes us chuckle about our foibles and our shared humanity -- like what Garrison Keillor does. The other kind holds people up to public contempt and ridicule -- that's what I do. Satire is traditionally the weapon of the powerless against the powerful. I only aim at the powerful. When satire is aimed at the powerless, it is not only cruel -- it's vulgar. (Molly Ivins, (1944-2007))

30. Oh, I'm sorry
I didn't aim my comedic choices at the high-brow level of Garrison Keillor. Because he is the standard by which all comedians should be judged. Clearly Silverman is too low brow for you.

What bullshit. I like Keillor. He is intelligent and can spin a tale like very few. That doesn't mean I can't like the down and dirty humor of Silverman. Just like I often sit down and revel in some Dvorak but also can switch the MP3 to The Ramones.

Did you every think that Silverman's satire is not aimed at the powerless but the people that view the powerless like her character sees it? Of course you did, because you are the high-brow comic genius.

46. So. A couple thoughts
1. You are the one that tosses out this Keillor quotation. Many, many, many comedic geniuses fail that Keillor test of Ivans. That smacked of pretension and you know it.

2. Fine, don't like her humor. But at least understand it for what it is.

3. So do you laugh at Comedy Central? Should Stewart stop saying bad things about Bush, because I bet Bush could be a charming guy in person. I bet people that speak badly of him might feel awkward when they met him.

she doesn't normally make jokes about individual people or celebrities. She was aclamating to the pseudo-thinking MTV audience, in addition to being scheduled immediately after Britney Spears "performance" on it.

If you don't think Sarah Silverman is funny, I'm sorry but you're a comedy retard. She's extremely respected in that world. Whether it's Bill Maher, all the Mr. Show people, Howard Stern, or Rosie O'Donnell, they all agree she's great.

off of the shit that Silverman mocked them for. If they don't want people to talk about them doing those things, then they should stop relying on those things to generate their fame and income. That's like saying, "How could anyone say that OJ was an asshole when he was right in the audience?"

A friend gave me a DVD set of The Office, raving about how great it is. I watched as much as I could stand (about 15 minutes) of the first two episodes and returned the DVDs. What I saw was an obnoxious jerk who thinks he's cool and a bunch of people intimidated by him. Why is this funny? We have obnoxious jerks in the real world and we don't laugh at them.

I'm a smart, witty guy, I really am. But The Office seemed about as funny to me as SS - namely not at all.

20. Whats not to get? She's a self centered spoiled person that thinks the world revolves around them ty
type who never gets it. She is just a typical american moron, its never about others its what she wants end of story. Never once does she connect that freedom to do as she wants also means letting others have the same freedoms. Every show so far has shown just how shallow of a person she is and I see it in the people around me, unless it effects them personally, then it doesn't happen unless you bring it on yourself type attitude. Take SO's mom for example, people shouldn't get government hand outs. Then she cries that she can't get no help from the Government, thats Sarah Silverman.

37. IMHO
I think she's somewhat mean-spirited. But then, the truth is, I don't like most stand-up comedy anyhow, and find most comedy to be completely subjective, and there are as many subjects to specialize in as there are comedians to talk about them. That said, I don't find much of the comedy currently popular to be my cup of tea, and only find one TV show, Two and a Half Men, to be something I definitely enjoy. On the other hand, one of my all-time favorites was The Odd Couple, which makes me think I care more about characterizations than the actual situations themselves.

It's okay, though; I am still stuck in the 70s with Monty Python, so I'm definitely not an expert on modern comedy!

41. Can't comment on her show, because I've never watched it. In the
past, I've seen her on shows where in attempting to be "edgy", she went way to far in making racial/rascist "observations" that pushed the limit way past anything I could be comfortable watching. The things I saw weren't witty, funny, poignant, or anything worth doing. Reminded me of an even less funny Andrew Dice Clay. I don't think I'll be watching her show anytine soon. Well, maybe if she goes topless.

72. The difference is...
Andrew Dice Clay is an arrogant ass. Sarah Silverman plays one on TV. I think her show is in the top 3 or so funniest shows on television, and it's precisely because of her constantly pushing the envelope. Yeah, it sometimes makes me uncomfortable, but I think the best comedy does.

42. She tries to imitate how Carroll O'Connor could play a bigoted lovable nit-wit.
Except he could play Archie Bunker with credibility.

She's so wooden in her delivery, she couldn't tie her shoe unless somebody sawed her in two and laid the pieces next to each other!

There comes a point when blatant vulgarity is not a substitute for comedy.

I'll admit, however, that the stab at Madonna did exude a brief chuckle...

...and I don't see her as a shining example of "Jewish Comedy". Members of my own family could knock over a room better than she can.

There is a certain low-brow Jewish comedy, epitomised by "Mad" magazine in the 60s (loved it) or Mel Brooks shtick in movies like "Blazing Saddles" and "Young Frankenstein". Totally lacking in sophistication but absolutely hilarious. Sacha Baron Cohen has it in spades, he's struck the perfect balance between piss-your-pants funny and stomach-clenching cringing. But Silverman, like Andy Kaufmann misses the boat. That cultist, smug, I'm-so-funny-and-if-you-don't-get-it-you-must-be-a-moron, mean-spiritedness really puts me off.

But what do I know? I think the funniest Jew out there is my little Bubbeleh Jon Stewart Liebowitz.

But aesthetic appreciation is not always quantifiable. I like certain kinds of music that some other people will gladly inform me they detest (e.g. The Dead) ... what's the point of endlessly debating whether it's "really" good or not? People like what they like.

I've seen Sarah Silverman deliver some monologues that were riotously funny. But I also got a couple episodes of her show off of itunes and was disappointed. It was pretty uneven.

but I believe MTV keeps hiring her year after year to host their awards show because they truly detest celebrities. She makes the audience squirm, and they really hate her. I mean, if she can make me feel sorry for Paris Hilton...ouch! Her show doesn't make fun of homeless people, just her character's reaction towards them. Her character is like that evil little girl from 'The Bad Seed', only she's funny as hell. It's like a politically incorrect 'Curb Your Enthusiasm', or 'Seinfeld' on meth.

Neither DH nor I. Maybe we're too far past 'cool'. But then I don't find a lot of the gross-out, stupid-people-acting-stupidly movies funny either. Farelly Brothers are on my no-go list no matter how good other people say the flick may be. SS is in the same category. She may be a comedic genius but she's just not to my taste.

I'll make an exception for Mr. Bean but prefer BlackAdder, just as mean but twice as funny.

75. I think age may have something to do with getting it.
People who are older probably have no idea of the world young people live in. They listen to rap music filled with explicit, demeaning lyrics, watch movies with 'sick' humour as a standard, their peers talk and act like this, it's reflected back to them in every part of their lives. They couldn't escape if they wanted to. The only alternatives to raunch culture comes from Christian and religious sources, which is a shame. So some of them go there and wind up screwed up in different ways.

I know these words make me sound like some sort of 'culture warrior' ala Bill O'Reilly, and truth be told, I do think there are some fundamentally wrong things with the culture that the left rarely addresses, partly to stand in contrast with the right. But unlike the right, I don't want to go back to the 50's, that magical time when everything was right.

Having said that, I'm ambivalent on SS. Not always my cup of tea, but some of it is funny. She seems self-aware that this will come across as mean and puts it out there in that context, rather that actually being mean, although who knows? She's pretty much about shock than anything. People who rely on this humour have a certain lifespan, because the audience gets acclimated. She is by no means the only one doing this, Margaret Cho, Chelsea Handler, hell too many to name. This is actually the new mold of comedy, so get used to it. Someday soon, she will be tame.

80. There's Just So Much That's Not True About Her Shtick
She ragged on Madonna, quoted above and the more I think about it, for me, SS is to stand-up comedy what Madonna is/was to modern music. It's all a put on.

Bill Hicks is mentioned in this thread; Hicks was 4 times as fierce and yet it was easy to see that at heart he was trying to put some genuine outrage across. I don't get the feeling that SS is outraged by her targets, I get the feeling she is trying to one-up them.

The only alternatives to raunch culture comes from Christian and religious sources, which is a shame.

That's just not so, but mainstream media is obsessed with short-cuts. Bravo, once upon a time, was a great TV channel, then NBC bought it. There's plenty of good stuff out there, it's just that people have to seek it out - and/or make their own. But you do bring up a great point; the movie Jesus Camp alludes to the problem of trash culture and religion attempting to fill the void with their own. A shame that point sails over the heads of most.

Yeah, there's an example of someone using outrage in a cool way.

I agree that I overstated that the only alternatives are religious, but they are hard to find and implement for the young. Most people think of the young as being extremely rebellious, but I believe that the main force driving most young people is conformity, conformity to their subgroup. It's very difficult for the typical young person to stand up against their peer group. Most peer group models have bought into raunch culture wholesale. Although something else is out there, most aren't going to seek it out or make it a part of their lives. Hell, most of them don't even understand or believe the dynamics we're talking about even exist.

How old you are?

I understand what you're saying, but even within peer groups there are subculture groups.

My "sub-group," as young 'uns, were blissed out by movies like "A Room with a View" and "Wings of Desire," fell in love with the Replacements, read our Ginger Man and Kundera. Contrary to what mainstream media would promote, we didn't throw it all overboard when Nirvana hit. But even then, like now, you had to seek the good stuff out. We were lucky to have an alternate weekly (Metroland) with a wonderful editor/publisher team.

A few weeks ago, I was at a Nashville production of Hedwig & the Angry Inch. In 14 years of being here, I've never seen a theatre crowd this excited to be at a production, and this young. Warmed the cockles of me heart :)

Hell, I can see where some people could find Andrew Dice Clay humorous-- not that I did-- moreso the the lowest common denominator style of humor.

Sarah Silverman? Just not funny.

But--it's all in who you know, I guess.

Of course-- she comes from the crowd of comics that felt that SNL in the late 90s and early 2000s was funny.... an insular little group who work in each other's movies and on each other's shows.

I just never got her act. The ready from a list of her routine on stage was insulting to the audience and viewers in my humble opinion

123. I "get" Silverman, I just don't think that she's funny.
At this point I'm hoping her ratings crash and the show makes way for something truly funny.

127. The venom level in this thread is jaw-dropping. I won't judge anyone
about what makes them laugh as long as they are not laughing at true cruelty.

Whether I care for her or not doesn't even matter.

130. She kissed the right ass, in the right places, at the right times, to get where she is
Sadly, that's all that is required any more to "make it big." Talent, skills, brains, sincerity, knowlege, passion, hard work - all of that is useless if you don't know the right people. In whatever field.

132. Q. If she's so funny, or gifted, or talented, why can't she come up with better material?

133. I think she's hilarious.
Humor is subjective. If you don't get it, or don't like it, then don't watch it. That's much preferable to crying about stuff you don't get, and starting a venomous thread confusing a comedienne's character with the comedienne.

136. In a word, no.
Methinks she is most impressed with herself. I, most definitely, am not.

Maybe I am getting old, but the crude humor schtick doesn't do it for me anymore.

142. I don't care for Sarah, but her sister Laura was great on "Dr Katz, Professional Therapist"
as the acerbic receptionist. I watched an episode of Sarah's show just to catch some of Laura again.

I just loved "Dr. Katz" - great vehicle for stand up style comedy!
