2. The bottom photo ...
I was immediately reminded of the pietas depicted in Christianity, the grieving Madonna embracing her dead son for the last time as he's taken down from the cross.

An innocent, brutally murdered.

Of course, those fine 'christians' who support this war will never notice the resemblance ...

11. "Those fine Christians" don't even realize that
According to most Christians in Baghdad before the bombing, Iraq was the best place in the Muslim world for Christians to live.

Of Course, now those Iraqi Christians are equally maimed killed refugee-ed etc.

Thanks to King George who talks to jesus!

25. I've always been struck
By how many of the iconic photos have been pietas. The images of grief and death are universal - how sad that this country's government are responsible for so many.

3. Why are journalists so bad with english?..maybe it was an Iraqi journalist whom I would forgive!
Edited on Sun Sep-16-07 03:15 PM by angstlessk
but the implication is he was killed in the morgue "...holds the body of her son, who was killed by gunmen, in a hospital morgue..." I know she was holding him in the morgue, he was not killed in the morgue, but I think writing is too sloppy now days!

edit: I watched on C-Span Book TV- a brother and sister writers- he wrote 'Collapse' regarding societies and she wrote some fiction book about women who garner revenge (forgot the name) but they talked about how they used to have to diagram sentences when they were in school. Had this sentence been diagrammed it would prove the child was killed in the morgue.

13. A vote for a anti war candidate is the way out of this mess.
If not we will just move the killing of innocent people to Iraq or Syria. And when the next president that we vote in continues war for profit, we will sit back and blame them instead of ourselves for putting them in their position to do so. I don't understand the majority of Americans logic?

Congress gave bush a loaded weapon and stocked him with ammo when he asked for it and we blame bush? Now we support candidates that took part in that and when they do it again as president, it will be too late.

23. you said it-
well.

Even those who have no mom to mourn them.

MLK said:

"Any man’s death diminishes me because I am involved in mankind; therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee." We must see this, believe this, and live by it if we are to remain awake through a great revolution.

--Martin Luther King, Jr., Remaining Awake Through A Great Revolution

until we truly understand this, there will never be true and lasting peace.

34. Boy, that is for sure.
I think about that fairly frequently. What if it were MY son? MY daughter? I remember the first time my then-Cub Scout took part in the annual Decoration of the Graves for the Memorial Day weekend - in which thousands of Boy, Girl, Cub, and Daisy Scouts participated, how every one of those headstones was someone's child, someone's true love, someone's heart. Some mother cried over EVERY ONE of those. Made me cry, too. Still does. War is only good for the grave-digger business and the war profiteers.

32. This is too sad.
If you have the DVD of Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 911", it has some special features at the end of the movie about the victims of "Shock and Awe" that will make you cry. The children victims are the ones that bring me to tears. Anyone who has a child of his/her own can't help but be affected by these images (and even those who don't have a child). This is why the media doesn't show these images.

This war sucks.
