President Petraeus?
by Rob Kall (OpEdNews)

General David Petraeus, the almost holy man that every member of congress in hearings recently paid homage to and sucked up to royally may not be nearly as apolitical as sycophantically suggested by his right wing and Dem admirers say.

Patrick Cockburn, writing in Counterpunch, reports: (General Confided White House Ambitions to Iraqi Official) http://www.counterpunch.org/block09132007.html

US commander in Iraq Gen David Petraeus expressed long-term interest in running for the US presidency when he was stationed in Baghdad three years ago according to a senior Iraqi official who knew him at that time.

Sabah Khadim, then a senior adviser and spokesman at the Iraqi Interior Ministry, says that Gen Petraeus discussed with him his long term ambition to be president when the general was head of training and recruitment of the Iraqi army in 2004-5.

“I asked him if he was planning to run in 2008 and he said ‘no, that would be too soon,” said Mr Khadim who now lives in London . . . more-

But Cockburn suggests that in light of Petraeus' expressed interest in a political future, it "may lead critics to suggest that his own political ambitions have influenced him in putting an optimistic gloss on the US military position in Iraq."

Another problem Petraeus may have is explaining the way huge sums of money and equipment disappear under his watch . . . more-

4. He'll have about as much chance as Westmoreland did
He's clearly a fucking idiot. No, wait. He's an 'ass kissing little chicken-shit', according to CENTCOM commander Fallon.

5. And Condi For President???
In a few years I think we'll look back on Petreus as one of the more pitiful characters of this ugly chapter of our history...a man who put his ambition and ass kissing ahead of all else and put his eggs in the wrong basket.

Fact is Petreus is the antithesis of an Eisenhower or Grant...who believed in the overall cause they were fighting for. Petreus showed little of that in his testimony...in fact he was embarassing in how narrowly he was focused and had no response to the question of "what happens next". And this is a "man with a vision"? Hardly.

The most telling tale of Petreus' fate is the war he's losing...inside the Pentagon. Fallon's all but trashed him and Gates is nowhere to be seen. Petreus has become a boooosh-licker and this will be his ultimate downfall both within the military and in politics. No one will vote for a military type who loses a war...and that will be Petreus' ultimate legacy.
