stressed out parents often have "short fuses".. a 3 yr old has potty training accidents and tantrums. It's very possible that someone shook her or smacked her & she fell.. An abduction story may have seemed like the only option they had, if that happened. If the twins were asleep they probably saw nothing, and mey not have been verbal enough anyway , to tell what happened.
There was a guy out here who murdered his wife, and when the 3 yr old wandered in, he killed her too.. The older daughter (then 8) had left for school already, or she would have been killed too.. the bastard actually took the 3 yr old with him in the van and then finally decided he had to kill her so she would not talk.. He's now on death row..
....................................................................................... Killer(s) of Baby and Mother: Search by Police and FBI Intensifies Riverside, CA — April 28, 1999 — Riverside Police are continuing to investigate the double Homicide of a mother and her young daughter. Mary Kopatz 35, and her young 3-year-old daughter Carley were brutally murdered on April 22, 1999. The bodies of the mother and her young daughter were located inside the family van, a distinctive teal blue Dodge Caravan, with a bright yellow "KFROG 95.1" Radio Station Sticker on the back bumper, in the 9300 block of Duncan Avenue at approximately 4:47 p.m. the same day. The preliminary investigation revealed that Mary was a devoted mother, friend and co-worker. The 35-year-old working mother of two young daughters has been described by family members, friends and co-workers as a fun, outgoing, witty and dependable young woman with a bright future. Mary had recently been promoted to a supervisory position at her place of employment.
Carley has been described as a cute, loving, lively little girl who was adored by everyone that met her. Carley was very creative, loved to draw and enjoyed playing with her eight-year-old sister. Close family friends and grandparents have expressed disbelief that someone could have murdered this defenseless little girl.
Investigators are very optimistic about the extensive forensic examinations that have been conducted and are scheduled to occur within the next week. Due to the brutal nature of the killings mother and young child, numerous agencies are involved in the murder investigation. Agencies assisting in the murder investigation include the California Department of Justice and the FBI. The FBI's National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime (NCAVC) located at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, commonly known as the "Profiling Unit" is conducting a behavioral analysis of the details of the murders. The NCAVC has examined numerous crimes with circumstances similar to those seen in the Kopatz murders. FBI Supervisory Special Agent Mary Ellen O'Toole & Mark Safarik, of the NCAVC, stated that, "often these types of crimes involve multiple offenders, however not all the offenders are equally involved in the commission of the crime."
Based on the information obtained in this investigation, the offender or offenders responsible for the brutal murders will face charges of First Degree Murder. California state law states that persons found guilty of First Degree Murder and those who conspire with them will face penalties of death or confinement in the state prison for life without the possibility of parole.
The NCAVC and Riverside Police Department investigators have a high level of confidence that forensic evidence located in the area where the Kopatz van was discovered and at several additional locations will provide the necessary information which will lead to the arrest of the offender or offenders who brutally killed young Carley and her mother, Mary. The offender or offenders in this case took quite a risk leaving the distinctive looking van in that particular location, and they cannot be sure they were not observed by someone in the neighborhood. Additional information and evidence were also located by the use of a law enforcement trained blood hound.
Extensive interviews are being conducted near the Kopatz residence and at the location where the vehicle was located on Duncan Avenue. The Riverside Police Department and the FBI will be conducting a number of strategically planned canvassings to locate additional witnesses or persons with information regarding the murders. In addition, SSA's Safarik and O'Toole have advised that with this type of close-up interaction between the offender(s) and the victims, key physical evidence is almost always recovered.
Anyone with information regarding the Kopatz murders is asked to notify the Riverside Police Department, Detective DeVinna or Shumway. &url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cybersleuths.com%2Fnews%2F00__1999news%2F04251999.htm&ei=sbPhRqjcKIGcgQPk75DiDA&usg=AFQjCNGQdXRgwuYNw8f6966AR5qcZxn_Bw&sig2=Z26dggyiFzxcblKxWXpkFw
