Iraq: At least 33 American soldiers killed in last eight days

Posted: 10-02-2007 , 06:52 GMT

U.S. helicopters mistakenly killed at least five allied Kurdish militiamen in the northern city of Mosul early Friday. The US military also reported three more American soldiers killed in combat, pushing the U.S. death toll to 33 in the first eight days of the month.

Meanwhile, U.S. and British forces face mounting casualties as they step up their presence to shore up Iraqi forces. Three more US troops died Thursday in fighting in Anbar province, the U.S. military said Friday. More than half the 33 American deaths this month have been in Anbar. In southern Iraq, a roadside bomb killed a British soldier, raising the number of British combat deaths since the war started to 101. Three Britons also were hurt.

Among the Americans killed this month were seven who died when a CH-46 Sea Knight helicopter crashed in Anbar on Wednesday.

In violence across Iraq on Friday, at least 36 people were killed or found dead.

1. My heart is breaking
and I don't know anybody serving in the military. I don't have to know the ones who died, and who are maimed, to mourn their loss, I don't have to know any Iraqis who are killed, or wounded, or displaced, to mourn them. Bush brought this about, but the guilt is one that we who opposed the war bear.

I have never been more ashamed of my government, or of the horror unleashed in my name. To allow a man like Bush to continue as the president, and enact his psychotic visions, is to turn our backs on every principle, every truth our country was founded on.

For the love of whatever you hold sacred, press to get Bush and Cheney impeached now. We don't have the luxury of waiting for our politicians to act. People are dying, and lives are being destroyed right now.

3. Scary. Bush could not run a one man business and yet look
he is now trying to run half the world. One can hardly wait for the war with Iran to start. You know in history people in power really worried about the Kaiser as he was so far off the wall and he had this great army and navy and look what he sort of did with his screw ups. Well we seem to have the same type in office that were in office during that war. Men that just do not seem to be able to govt. at all. I think like the last Czar/Kaiser/Emperor Bush will say he is right and not one thing any one tells him will change his mind. He will go to war if he feels like it. This mess will go on until we get rid of that screw up and his pals in the WH and other dept. When thing are changing in society and you have all these men who are week in mind but have all this power it just is going to be one big mess. In fact we are still trying to fix some of the mess that the the Germans, Russians, Turks and Austrian made with the help of Eng.Fr and US made at the end of WW1.Normal people just must get a hold of their govt. once more. No more money for war. We must get Congress to point out that war in Iraq does not mean Bush can go to war any place. This is just madness. I better get off this site I am starting to become insane.

20. but what about surrender?
Come to think of it, if we did surrender, would that stop the sectarian violence? ha

We have three major splinter shia groups, including the largest which appears to be controlled by Sadr, we have several sunni groups, which actively attack the shia, torture, kidnap and kill, (supported by Saudi Arabian families with weapons, money and intel) We have the Kurds engaged in ethnic cleansing in the north.

Our presence only makes things worse. A surge will just increase the violence.

23. Well, that was quick.
But maybe before you get tombstoned, you can answer a serious question: the longer American troops fight and die in Iraq, the stronger Iran's position becomes, regionally and globally. Why is George W Bush doing everything in his power to strengthen Iran? Is that not given material aid and comfort to the enemy?

26. Yes, surrender immediately
Because Bush has lost the war. It was lost as soon as we invaded a country that did not threaten us. We've lost diplomatically, we've lost militarily, we've lost financially. We've lost our honor, our morality, our leadership in the world and most of all we've lost our freedom. We should surrender and leave Iraq. That is the only option remaining to us that will allow America to return to sanity and rejoin the civilized world.

Otherwise we will be destroyed. Not by the jihadists from the ME - who are just bogeymen used to keep people in fear. The real threat is from within - the corporatists, dominionists and fascists who are now in control of our country.
