Re: Padilla OK. Let Me Get This Straight
The Bush Administration sees the Padilla conviction as a vindication/validation of their anti-terrorism efforts. Even though it was for a far lesser charge than the original newsblast, they claim victory.

However, . . .

He was tried in open court. He was convicted by normal due process. He is now a convicted criminal. Right?

That means they were treating terrorism as a law enforcement matter, and not a military matter.

THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT THEY SAID CLINTON DID WRONG! We heard over and over and over again, that Clinton's big mistake was he treated terrorism as a law enforcement matter and not a defense issue.

Now they're claiming success because they treated this like a law enforcement matter? So, they were successful because they did it wrong?

Huh?

2. Kept My Head Down
I don't buy into economic armageddon. I don't accept all the doom and gloom, don't ascribe much value to currency exchange rates in a global economy, and don't see this as a prelude to Depression. It's a correction due to an overinflated market which grew despite a stagnant economy. Was bound to happen.

So, rather than get into a fight with a doom and gloomer, i stayed out.

Sorry about chickening out.

3. In the old America,
the prosecution couldn't have "secret" evidence, excercised torture, held someone 3 1/2 years without charge, etc.. Yes, this is a victory for tyranny so far. Under the old constitutional system, this would have been thrown out. They have successfully worked it and set dangerous precedent that apparently the people have accepted.

5. Good Point, monk
But, that is not what they meant. They are claiming it as a victory over terrorism. But, you make a good case that for the "secret gov't" it is a victory.

6. They blasted Clinton for sending cruise missiles into Afghanistan
against OBL, which hardly qualifies as a law enforcement type of response.

So many contradictions, so little time.

7. I Should Have Included That
I thought of that earlier, and it slipped my mind. Thanks for reminding me.
