Man Accused Of Battery In Exorcism Attempt Surrenders. Police: 22-Year-Old Beat Autistic Teen
Edited on Wed Aug-01-07 05:43 PM by IanDB1
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- A man accused of beating an autistic teen during an exorcism attempt turned himself in to the Monroe County Sheriff's Department on Wednesday, the department said.

Edward Uyesugi II, 22, of Paoli, was arrested on charges of confinement and battery with bodily injury.

Police said Uyesugi hurt a 14-year-old boy while ostensibly trying to cast demons from him at the teen's Bloomington home in May. Authorities said Uyesugi, who was then an usher at the Cherry Hill Christian Center, told the boy's family an exorcism could cure the teenager of his autism.

A Monroe County sheriff's detective said Uyesugi forced the boy down, punched him in the face several times and put his fingers in the boy's throat, causing him to vomit.

1. This almost makes me believe in demonic possession.
Not of those being exorcised, rather of the self-styled exorcists.

Almost, but not quite.

3. Another Attempt to Exorcise the Demons of Autism
The child did not survive this one.

(CBS/AP) An autistic 8-year-old boy died while wrapped in sheets during a prayer service held to exorcise the evil spirits that church members blamed for his condition.

The minister who performed the service was arrested in connection with the death, which occurred Friday night at a church in a run-down strip mall.

The mother had been taking her son to Faith Temple Church of the Apostolic Faith three times a week for the last three weeks in hopes of curing his autism, said Bishop David Hemphill Sr.

It was after more than an hour of prayer that a parishioner noticed the boy was no longer moving and called emergency workers, Hemphill said. The boy's grandmother said force was used, an allegation disputed by church members.

9. yup, catholic hierarchy was afraid laymen would start doing this...
that's why, even though i'm no longer catholic, i worry about people who just wander off and say 'i'm gonna learn religion and rituals on my own." basically, it's a worry i have when people try to self-educate in general. there's a reason why teachers exist -- it's to help students avoid common (and possibly dangerous) mistakes. it's just like people self-medicating thinking they're as good as a doctor or pharmacist, or people trying to do construction without any knowledge or training. there's a reason the world has professionals and skilled amateurs. it's to avoid people getting hurt.

i know perfectly well any modern catholic priest worth anything would have dissuaded any parent of an autistic from doing something so completely foolish. vatican council 1 & 2 (which Pope Ratzi seems to want to undo) was a very good thing for the church, aligning it with the new western scientific tradition (for the most part), and lately avoiding travesties like this. the info in the articles about strip mall churches makes my pentacostal/charismatic warning flags go off big time. there can be good people in every group, but democratizing things like this and saying anyone can do it has a price, as we can see.
