There is still a huge national interest in getting off foreign oil dependence. We need to find and use alternative energy if for no other reason than National Security. Why should we put ourselves in a position where foreign countries can cripple us by withholding oil from us or using the money we give them for the oil to finance those that don't really like us much? It is in the National interest to research Alternative Energy sources and IMO the current Administration is going directly against the National Interest by their continued promotion of Petroleum usage.

2. I've been saying for some time that we need a "Manhattan-like Project" effort

to come up with alternative energy sources for just the reasons you mentioned. I have no doubt that with the scientific and engineering power that this country has we could come up with a solution or series of solutions that would release us from our dependence on foreign oil. All we need is the political willpower to do it.
