Dear Congressman Conyers:
Before you assumed the reigns as Chair of the House Judiciary Committee, you called for an investigation into the possibility of impeachment. Upon becoming Chair, you suddenly stopped talking about impeachment -- a rather disturbing development that can only make one wonder if someone else, perhaps the Speaker, threatened to take your chairmanship away if you initiated impeachment proceedings. More recently, I have noted that your wife introduced and passed an impeachment resolution to the Detroit City Council. Bravo for her -- and for you, since, most likely, she would not have acted without your blessing.
Perhaps you heard -- just this week the West Hollywood City Council passed a resolution calling for the impeachment of Bush and Cheney. A few months earlier, the California Democratic Party passed an impeachment resolution. Locally, we have established a Los Angeles National Impeachment Center, where activists write letters and make phone calls to further the cause. We understand that leaders, like yourself, need the grassroots, the American people, behind them, clamoring for accountability -- and we are doing our best to make that happen.
Regardless of our efforts, however, your responsibility is to uphold the U.S. Constitution. Doing so means preserving the rule of law, the Bill of Rights, and the checks and balances inherent in our system.
When the Executive branch abuses its power, ignores the rule of law and commits high crimes, it
is your duty to hold the violators accountable and thereby protect the American people from future abuses of power. The word impeachment is mentioned six times in the Constitution, most probably because our founders wanted there to be recourse should the country's leaders commit high crimes.
Please immediately pass Articles of Impeachment against President Bush and Vice-President Cheney.
Bush and Cheney, either alone or in concert, were responsible for ordering massive illegal wiretapping, orchestrating extraordinary renditions or kidnappings, approving the widespread use of torture, revealing the identity of a CIA agent and then obstructing the investigation, issuing signing statements that ignored the will of Congress, and misleading the nation into a war that has cost upwards of a million lives.
Some who hesitate to impeach argue that impeachment hearings would take up too much time or interfere with other pressing matters. What could be more important than preserving our democracy and restoring our constitutional rights? What could be more important than surfacing the misleading statements that led us to war, thereby hastening an end to the US occupation of Iraq and preventing the United States from launching another attack on a sovereign nation?
Please act now before these men lead us to war again -- in Iran. No time to waste here. Protect us and impeach Bush and Cheney for high crimes. Before the House can impeach or the Senate can hold a trial, the House Judiciary Committee must pass Articles of Impeachment. The people look to you for leadership.
Thank you, Congressman Conyers, for all that you do and have done in your years of public service. I have nothing but the utmost respect for you.
Sincerely,
Marcy Winograd
