we can call repukes every name in the book and wish them unwell....
...until, that is, they croak or get real sick. then we seem to have to forget about all the pain, suffering, death and destruction they've caused the world and forget their victims and instead pay homage to them and cry for their suffering and the suffering of their fascist families and friends.

wtf?

what about the war? what about the destruction to the environment? what about the theft of our national treasury for corporate gain? what about the death and murder for profit? what about the suffering? what about corporate control of our food supply, our environment, our healthcare? what about all of that? why am i supposed to weep and send my condolenses when a republican liar and theft and murderer gets sick and dies? to me that sounds disgusting, especially when i think of all the unnecessary death and destruction these people have caused. would the minority of DUers that are offended by my lasseiz faire attitude toward a sick or dead american nazi weep if they were around when hitler went belly up?

i'm against fascists when they're alive and i'm still against them when they're sick or dying.

Edited on Mon Jul-16-07 05:10 PM by blondeatlast
That's precisely how he thinks as well. There's a place for decorum and I will honor it.

Holding one's tongue is a lost, but necessary, art.

In fact, I'll support a statue being erected upon his death, celebrating his death, with a plaque mentioning how he's burning in hell.

15. Normally, I Don't Celebrate ANY Death
In fact, I remember when Reagan died a few years back and I was at Pride in Philadelphia - Sandra Bernhardt was the guest and she was taking such GLEE at his death; my friends and I had to leave. I was not a Reagan fan but I don't really believe in celebrating a person's death, especially someone so old and ill.

That being said, I will, in fact, give three cheers and a hearty "F.U.!" when Fred Phelps finally kicks off. And I hope it's an extremely long, extremely painful process. That's because he's not a person.

19. C'Mon Borny...You've GOT to Be Kidding.
Phelps has devoted his entire life to destroying homosexuals. Not just making sure they don't get married, or have equal rights, but DESTROYING them. If he thought he could get away with it, he'd be killing them in the streets. He's a MONSTER.

Reagan turned an unconscionably blind eye to the thousands suffering and dying from AIDS during his administration, and yes, that was evil. But whatever his flaws, I still think he was a human being. Not a good man, perhaps, but not a monster.

59. Phelps Lives to Hate. That's ALL He Does. I Believe Reagan Was a Person.
I'm not going to try and tell you he was a good man. But I believe he was a man. His vision for this country was scary and twisted, but I honestly believe it did not originate from hate, despite the hatred he might have held for some people (including me).

ALL Phelps does is hate. That's his sole reason for being.

39. Nope
I voted for Mondale in 1984, but nice try. I've posted about it before. I was born in 1966 and he was the first presidential candidate I voted for. I then proceeded to vote for Dukakis in 1988, Clinton in 1992 and 1996(I was in the Army from 1988-1999), Gore in 2000 and Kerry in 2004. I'm supporting Obama in 2008.

I think I probably voted for Pataki for governor of my state in 2002(endorsed by the states largest gay rights group and health care union), but I'm not entirely sure about that. If I did, he's the only major-office Republican I've ever voted for.

I don't believe that Reagan hated homosexuals. I believe he was wrong in almost everything he did but you don't know what was in Reagan's heart. You don't know that he hated homosexuals or other minorities. We KNOW that Fred Phelps hates homosexuals.

....and all of tony snow's work as press secretary is noble and good. and he deserves to be honored with many threads here at DU praising him and showing sympathy for his friends and family. and yet, there are thousands of dead US soldiers and hundreds of thousands of dead iraqi civilians and none of them get their own special threads at DU.

sorry, i think that's backwards.

you get mad at me for calling the repubs fascists and you compare me to freepers. i haven't called you any names. some einstein here compared me to fred phelps. i haven't called anyone here any names to deserve that.

i feel, as do many others here, that the repubs qualify as fascists. what would you call starting illegal wars to enrich corporate cronies?

You people's brain cells are missing or have been stirred with an ice pick. Fred Phelps is a crazy old man, really disturbed. Reagan was a PIG who actually did REAL things to people and was in a position, some might call, the most powerful in the world, the president of our country. How can you even compare an old crazy man with a big mouth to the leader of America? Jeez much. Phelps causes no REAL harm. Reagan did.

50. nobody yet but.....
....someone posted another thread where they predicted tony snow only has 6 months at the most. then a bunch of people chimed in saying how sad that is and that they felt so sorry for his family and how much better we are than the freepers because we're sympathetic to great human beings like tony snow that are dying......oh i tell ya i had to go puke.

all of the sudden all the victims of the iraq war, katrina, 911, the environment and everything else is tossed aside so a few DUers can pretend to feel better than the garden variety freeper. all the death and destruction take the back seat and words of sadness and sorrow must be spoken for tony snow (the guy who lies daily for bushco and did the same at fox news).

oh....we have to show how much better we are than the freepers and forget the death and destruction caused by the repukes and take the time to honor them when they are sick or dying. oh it's so heart wrenching.

f*ck that. i know i'm better than any freeptard. i don't need to pretend to feel bad for some fascist and his family who has helped to bring about the horrible conditions of the world. they can go cry for dead freepers, tony snow, and hitler if they like. not me.

the funny thing is that i never said anything about taking joy in the deaths of these people. i only said i don't feel any sense of loss when people like that pass on. i feel bad, instead, for their victims. and my post gets deleted.

but please, spare us all the fake sympathy for these people when they're dying or dead. why waste bandwidth with threads honoring war mongers and corporate thugs who cause so much pain, death and destruction? why? please explain why, when there are so many victims to show sympathy for instead.

Not a loss for what they ARE- I'm glad the world is rid of that.

But it's sad that they no longer have the chance to CHANGE-
to see the light and become GOOD people.

It has happened, you know. Happens to someone, somewhere,
every damn day.

As long as they are ALIVE, it's not too late to try to make
things right. Once they're gone, that possibility dies with
them. And that's a sad thing.

16. I Agree With You, DS
The thing that's sad when someone evil dies is the missed opportunity. Here was a person in a position to do a lot of good for a lot of people, and they chose to just promote their own agenda instead, or spew hate, or oppress their people. I felt like that when Hussein died: I wasn't sorry he was gone, but it wasn't a victory, either: it was such a waste. That tool could have done great things for his people, and instead he died a lonely loser.

I said I'm not sorry he's dead. Just because I don't think it's a cause for celebration doesn't mean I'm not sincere in my lack of sorrow. As it were.

You are correct that the US had no right to kill him. However, since a large majority of his own populace would have gladly torn him limb from limb, that doesn't bother me overmuch. We have since moved on to much greater atrocities.

When bush et. al shuffle off this mortal coil, would you expect Iraqis to exhibit a similar sense of piousness?

Regarding bush, what "change" could possible make up for starting an illegal war that has resulted in the deaths of over half a million people? Plant a tree?

As bad as things were under those guys, who knows what would have happened if they'd been killed. Maybe I read too many comic books as a kid, but I think it's always a bad idea to try and change history. It NEVER worked out good for Superman (except in the movie - that part was SO lame.)

Meanwhile, as I said above, I'd normally agree with your "don't wish for people to die" stance, but in the case of Phelps, I don't think normal human rules apply. I'm still holding out hope that the members of his clan will turn on each other and finish each other off in some kind of religious frenzy meltdown, or maybe the propane tanks will go on his little shanty o' hate and blast them all to nothingness. That would be sweet.

Yeah, I hate the hypocrisy under the guise of good manners or decorum or what the fuck ever. Nasty assholes don't become holy saints because they go belly up.

63. I don't celebrate or feel any joy when one of them dies but
I can't say I feel any sadness either for all the reasons you cite.
