In a county that bleeds Jean Schmidt red, children go unadopted

Now here's hypocrisy for you -- the county that always delivers the RW vote, which gave us the neofascist right-to-life extremists, home to Ken Blackwell, Jean Schmidt, Bob Taft and John Boehner...Hey, but these children aren't frozen embryos or blastocysts, so why should they care?

Adoption rate worst in years
BY DAN HORN | [email protected]

Hamilton County’s already poor adoption rate got worse last year when the number of children placed with new parents fell to its lowest level in years.

A report released this week found that the county’s Department of Job and Family Services placed 137 children with adoptive parents in 2006, or about 25 percent of those children eligible.

That’s a drop from 36 percent in 2005 and about half the rate of Ohio’s other large counties.

Hamilton County’s numbers are especially poor for hard-to-place children, such as African-Americans, children over 10 and kids who have been in the county’s custody for more than two years.... MORE

1. A bit more of the article...
"The findings are included in Wassermann’s final report as the monitor overseeing a federal court settlement signed in 2002.

"The settlement resolved a 1999 lawsuit that accused the county of racial discrimination in adoptions. Wassermann, who could not be reached, said he found no evidence of discrimination but is concerned about the overall adoption rate.

"Attorney Al Gerhardstein, who filed the original lawsuit, agreed discrimination is no longer the issue.

“They’ve treated all potentially adopted children equally bad,” Gerhardstein said.

2. maybe they could promote advanced or mature
embryo adoption, since they don't give a darn about children.

3. I wonder how much of this has to do with white flight.
Edited on Thu Jul-05-07 11:12 PM by Rosemary2205
Seems to me quite a lot of middle class whites are leaving Hamilton County and moving to Clermont, Butler, Warren, Northern Kentucky and eastern Indiana.

I'm just wondering if perhaps Hamilton has lost quite a lot of civic leaders to other counties.

5. The counties you speak of full of rabid GOPers
Check the voting statistics and you'll find the very counties you mentioned ar even more rabidly RW GOP than Hamilton County. These are the same folks in SW Ohio who live in counties full of hate groups (see the map from the Southern Poverty Law Center) and founded that pathetically idiotic creationist museum. They love 'em some Jean Schmidt and Ken "the Lunatic" Blackwell and can fill up a stadium full of flag-waving anti-choicers faster than Michael Bush can bust a move.

I'm sure Columbus and Cleveland have had more than their share of "white flight" as well but they manage to vote Dem AND their children get adopted. This is not a matter of civic leadership, it's a matter of moral leadership. And as usual, it's the lack of moral leadership that always exposes the hypocritical underbelly of the neofascists and their fundamentalist allies.

8. Do the counties I mentioned have trouble with adoptions?
I don't understand how it can be the fault of GOPers in Butler county that Hamilton Co can't support their children.

4. The fundies

prefer foreign adoption, mostly Asian kids., It's kind of a status thing for them, once they have the MacMansion in a gated community and 2 SUV's in the garage. As far as American children go they don't want to deal with them, 10 is kind of old for indoctrination and some came from bad backgrounds "gasp". They do not want their own children exposed to the fact that maybe people in this country are suffering, even if they are not "sinners"
