Cable News is Out of Control
Edited on Fri Jun-29-07 08:06 AM by sparosnare
I've known it for a long time, but still watch anyway. However this morning's coverage of the London bomb scare has made me decide to tune out permanently, except for Keith Olbermann.

We're now a couple of hours into a report that so far gives us very few facts. Of course the lack of facts isn't a deterrent to the overzealous talking heads eager to jump to conclusions. I've been watching MSNBC (Joe Scarborough) and here are a few of the hightlights of their so-called reporting: the perpetrator is a muslim terrorist extremist (or several); the British are much more vigilant than Americans - we're complacent when it comes to terrorist attacks, we should be ratting out our neighbors and putting cameras on every corner; and the type of 'device' found is similar to those used in Iraq.

Know what? I DON'T CARE.

They can continue fearmongering all they want, I need some peace. The nonsensical coverage of celebrities doesn't even bother me as much as this crap.

1. Three benefits of Cutting the Cable
Edited on Fri Jun-29-07 08:24 AM by SpiralHawk
1. You stop feeding the Beast/Borg with your money.

2. You SAVE money that you can spend on your family, or send to support the political cause of your choice.

3. You free your soul from the incessant catapulting of right-wing corporate republicon propaganda.

2. Yep, agree. But the WORST part is thanks to bush** and cheney,
the west is fated to suffer some more 'terrorism'. That's a guarantee. The entire Middle East hates us. And want revenge.

3. It's amazing how much they are lying today
I heard them claim that the British people are 100% supportive of the war in Iraq. (!!!???)

It's tragic that these so called journalists have completely sold out the truth to feed their own greed.

5. Do you get BBC America? They show the WORLD NEWS from six to nine
The most boring bit is "SPORT" (without the S, as they do) but they run in fairly long rotation, with updates, during those three hours. It's genuine WORLD news, too, and keeps one up to date on what's happening on all the other continents of our big blue marble. And they even have PICTURES!! They get the video, and show it! It's a zillion times better than any of the shit we're served up on any station, network or cable.

MSNBC in the morning is completely unwatchable. Dan Abrams oughta shitcan that mess.

6. I don't get it unfortunately.
I'm thinking of getting satellite TV though, so that would be an option. Thanks - and I agree about MSNBC; CNN too for that matter. Horrible stuff.

25. It's really worthwhile, if you are going for coverage other than over-the-air broadcasts
They've even got a few funny shows as well--there's one called "How Clean Is Your House?" which has this tall, large, in charge, blonde woman with an up-do, accompanied by a wee Scottish lady (Kim and Aggie), descend upon people's homes, tell them in no uncertain terms what absolute PIGS they are (and the people they help ARE pigs), clean their house and force them to help, and then, a week or two later, come back and check up on them!

Highlights of the program include testing countertops for things like e-coli and feces, the obligatory sprinking of invisible powder, visible only with a black light, on the rug to see if the person did any vacuuming for the follow up visit, and a view of the piles of crap (slurry water and vacuum cleaner detrius) that were removed from the offending home! Oh, and the varying 'marigolds' (the rubber gloves) worn by the rather imposing star of the show, trimmed with everything from maribou feathers to faux diamonds!

We like that show because it makes us feel virtuous--the old "Geez, at our worst, we've never been THAT bad!" attitude!!

12. There is NOTHING boring about Sport....
...I will have to check it out now...I didn't realize they gave Sport much coverage...and yes, it is a MILLION times better than the dreck served up daily to the sheeple over here...

22. Well, to each his own, certainly!
It's really quite good, the entire broadcast--even though I find "Sport" the optimal time to head for the bathroom(!). You come away feeling as you did back in the Cronkite era, like you've actually learned a little something. The reporting is superb, and the visuals are outstanding.

7. Something to remember...the morning "news" isn't meant to be "watched."
Part of the reason it repeats over and over and over is because they assume that MOST people (unlike DU news addicts) will turn it on as they go about their coffee-making, showering, etc, and will only actually see ten minutes of the program. They design it so that the average short-term viewer will not miss what they decide are the key stories. We're not average. We're practically manic about news here. Normal people don't watch the news all day long.

10. It's not so much the repetitiveness; it's the lack of facts.
Edited on Fri Jun-29-07 08:14 AM by sparosnare
Some of the stuff I heard was downright laughable, and if that was the only 5 or 10 minutes I heard, I'd be seriously misinformed.

18. As I said in my other post, they're blatantly making stuff up.
They count on stupid viewers who don't know how to listen. "Smoke in the car," without saying how much, what kind, etc. Just speculation about what it MIGHT have been, which is always the WORST. I've yet to hear them say "the smoke could be from a cigarette." Nope. It appears to CNN that the smoke indicated the impending end of the world. It really is just blatant LYING. They're just making it up as we go along.

Also, look at the pictures they're showing on CNN...I get better quality photos from my three-year-old cell phone. Isn't it strange how the news agencies and the government always seem to convenienty have the very worst technology available to them when it comes to giving us proof of anything?

BTW, the guy on CNN who took the pics of the patio gas cylinder -- one cylinder -- said that's all he saw there. ONE cylinder of propane used for grill, NOT the trunk full of cylinders CNN has been repeatedly reporting as a speculative fact. I'm waiting to see this huge cache of nails...I'll bet you anything it's a standard box of nails like you'd buy from the hardware store.

I got rid of expanded basic (I need some cable where I live or I get one channel) and haven't missed it at all. I actually save about $40.00 a month and can watch whatever I want through youtube, netflix, whatever.

20. 'I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!'
Howard Beale: I don't have to tell you things are bad. Everybody knows things are bad. It's a depression. Everybody's out of work or scared of losing their job. The dollar buys a nickel's work, banks are going bust, shopkeepers keep a gun under the counter. Punks are running wild in the street and there's nobody anywhere who seems to know what to do, and there's no end to it. We know the air is unfit to breathe and our food is unfit to eat, and we sit watching our TV's while some local newscaster tells us that today we had fifteen homicides and sixty-three violent crimes, as if that's the way it's supposed to be. We know things are bad - worse than bad. They're crazy. It's like everything everywhere is going crazy, so we don't go out anymore. We sit in the house, and slowly the world we are living in is getting smaller, and all we say is, 'Please, at least leave us alone in our living rooms. Let me have my toaster and my TV and my steel-belted radials and I won't say anything. Just leave us alone.' Well, I'm not gonna leave you alone. I want you to get mad! I don't want you to protest. I don't want you to riot - I don't want you to write to your congressman because I wouldn't know what to tell you to write. I don't know what to do about the depression and the inflation and the Russians and the crime in the street. All I know is that first you've got to get mad.
Howard Beale: You've got to say, 'I'm a HUMAN BEING, Goddamnit! My life has VALUE!' So I want you to get up now. I want all of you to get up out of your chairs. I want you to get up right now and go to the window. Open it, and stick your head out, and yell,

Howard Beale: 'I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!' I want you to get up right now, sit up, go to your windows, open them and stick your head out and yell - 'I'm as mad as hell and I'm not going to take this anymore!' Things have got to change. But first, you've gotta get mad!... You've got to say, 'I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!' Then we'll figure out what to do about the depression and the inflation and the oil crisis. But first get up out of your chairs, open the window, stick your head out, and yell, and say it:
Howard Beale: "I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!"
