Chavez Warns of Resistance War With U.S.
Chavez Warns of Resistance War With U.S.
Published: 6/24/07, 11:45 PM EDT
By CHRISTOPHER TOOTHAKER
CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) - President Hugo Chavez urged soldiers on Sunday to prepare for a guerrilla-style war against the United States, saying that Washington is using psychological and economic warfare as part of an unconventional campaign aimed at derailing his government.

Dressing in olive green fatigues and a red beret, Chavez spoke inside Tiuna Fort - Venezuela's military nerve-center - before hundreds of uniformed soldiers standing alongside armored vehicles and tanks decorated with banners reading: "Fatherland, Socialism, or Death! We will triumph!"

"We must continue developing the resistance war, that's the anti-imperialist weapon. We must think and prepare for the resistance war everyday," said Chavez, who has repeatedly warned that American soldiers could invade Venezuela to seize control of the South American nation's immense oil reserves.

U.S. officials reject claims that Washington is considering a military attack. But the U.S. government has expressed concern over what it perceives as a significant arms built-up here.

1. Quite frankly after Iraq I don't blame any nation
for being on the defense in regards to the US. The world is not happy with the US.

2. I don't blame him one bit either. It's a shame that we have become
a feared rogue nation. This is what the Bush/Cheney Experiment has brought us to. We, The People must stand up for our Country, as it seems that Congress is unable or unwilling to stand up for us.

3. John Perkins said, in his last BookTV segment, that the only reason
we're aren't in Venezuela is because we're overextended in Iraq. He said after the economic hitmen and then the jackals, comes the military threat.

4. "Socialism or Death"????
What about the Venezolanos that don't want socialism?

Should they be put to death?

Bumper sticker politics suck.

google it.

13. I don't need to Google it. I simply oppose the sentiment.
Socialism or Death--doesn't sound too democratic to me.

19. If you did some research
you'd discover that it became popular with movements who were looking to a more democratic alternative to death and fascism.

20. Which isn't at all the case in Venezuela today.
Now, it comes across as an ultimatum. It's the ultimate "If you're not with us, you're with them" kind of comment that we excoriate Bush for making.

By continuing to use an outdated bumpersticker slogan, Chavez is implying that the choice today for his countrymen is socialismo or muerte. For those who oppose socialism, that wouldn't sound too appealing or comforting.

22. Setting aside that I doubt you're a Venezuelan and can make that claim

(which I suspect because you seem to not understand the historical context of that phrase) I'm going to lean toward believing that most Venezuelans do understand the historical context and don't hear it as an ultimatum but as a rallying cry against the neoliberal policies that have caused so much misery and death and lost opportunities in developing countries around the world.

5. "significant arms build-up"
Venezuela has built-up to .0001% of our arms levels.

8. IMO, the United States isn't going to war with Venezuela anytime soon
The spike in oil prices would be political suicide. And whether Chavez tells people to prepare or not, there would be a resistance to prevent the US from getting their hands on the oil infrastructure.

12. Do you *honestly* think that the Bush/Cheney Experiment is concerned about
political suicide?? Honestly?? People need to face the truth right now. That truth is: the Bush/Cheney Experiment isn't going anywhere. They have entrenched themselves in our Government and have taken over. Period. If I'm wrong, I'll admit it once a new President takes office in Jan 2009. I just have a very ominous feeling, and I don't like it one bit. I'm not a naysayer nor a doomsday town crier, I'm usually pretty optimistic about things, even when I have no reason to be optimistic. I just always hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. I just can't shake this feeling.

PEACE!

Ghost

10. Chavez is feeling the heat at home.......
He's trying to play up the anti-America card in order to get people to rally behind him, especially after the intense opposition he's recently faced over his moves to censor the media.

15. The Argentine military junta did much the same thing 25 years ago.
"Let's jab a stick in the eye of the big, bad superpower, and see if we can piss them off. Then, when our populace is so focused on hating the superpower enemy, they won't notice our domestic crimes and screw-ups."

will they admit that they tried to over throw Chavez?
