LA Times Review of Can Mr. Smith Get to Washington Anymore?
We open in LA today (http://www.laemmle.com/viewmovie.php?mid=2335), so the Times gave us a review.

They really got the movie and why we feel it is extremely relevan today.

http://www.calendarlive.com/movies/reviews/cl-et-smith2feb02,1,4878521.story

In many ways, the film's presentation of Carnahan's privileged position secures it a timeliness and scope that reach beyond its ostensible subject.......

By early 2009, someone named Bush or Clinton will have served as U.S. president for the previous 20 years. With Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton positioned as a leading candidate for the Democratic nomination and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush looming as a dark horse Republicancontender, the dynastic trending of American politics could not have a higher profile.....

The film is an inspiring look at the power of youthful energy and politics that are position-driven, but as Smith cuts into Carnahan's early 30-point lead we are reminded of the advantages of money and privilege.

1. I agree with the legacy argument, but not the assumption that Bushs=Clintons.
The Bush legacy - GWB - has been disasterous for our country. No matter what, I don't think Hillary C would be nearly so stupid.

Bushes do NOT = Clintons.

9. Nope, but another Clinton is not what this country needs
because wealth inequality increased under the first one faster than it had under the two preceding administrations.

Our economic system is unsustainable and about to get very unstable. We need somebody with a little more flexibility than a dogmatist of the Third Way.

10. Lesser of two evils is not the way to run a country.
Yet, Clinton leads because she has name rcognition and access to cash. Watch all the dems who line up behind her just to be on the gravy train.

This is so exciting and impressive. I won't be able to find it in a theater. Do I remember correctly that it will be on PBS?

4. I loved it
One of the few movies I have paid to see in more than 5 years. It was completely worth it.

I'll watch again when it shows on PBS. (CONGRATS!)

5. I am so glad you got to see it in Portland.
When we can get people to see the movie they almost all really like it. We don't have a giant ad budget or a big star behind the film, so it is a real challenge to get people to watch it.

6. I can't wait to see this film.
...I’d like to know why Hillary is running in the first place.

Half the country hates both Clintons, and most democrats don’t like Hillary. Why is she pushing herself on us? I can’t understand how the media keeps saying she’s the front runner.

Her running doesn’t make sense. You can’t take such a polarizing figure and make them president.

With Hillary choking off funds going to other candidates, how could anyone else get the money she’s getting to finance their campaigns?

So...our choices in ‘08 will be a republican or Hillary. So in the end we’ll have either a republican president or a president that 75% of America hates.

8. That's why primaries are so important.
It is our only chance many time sto vote for someone who really stands for our values. Unfortuanetly, too many people vote for the person they think will win just because.

The parrallells between the Obama/Clinton race and the one we highlight are striking.

11. During the '04 primaries, I went into the polling booth wanting to vote for Dean.
Unfortunately he just dropped out of the race, but his name was still on the ballot.

I voted for Kerry only because the party got behind him. I figured if Kerry was going to be the front runner, I wanted him to win big, this way if he did go into the general election, it would look as if he had our full support.

I remember being in the election booth and actually sighing as I looked at Dean's name and voted for Kerry.

As I left the booth one of the election workers apologized for taking so long finding my name. She thought I sighed because I was mad at her...I laughed and then corrected her. ...She thought I was nuts.

12. It happens election after election.
In some ways Americans deserve the government the get.

What will be interesting this time is watching black civil rights leaders line up behind Hillary and not Obama simply b/c they want to feed at the trough of power.
