London getting Sicko debut

By James Reaney / Sun Media

With Oscar-winner Michael Moore himself on hand to mark the event and celebrity buzz growing, London is landing early exposure to Sicko.

Sicko, controversial U.S. film director Moore's documentary on the U.S. health-care system, will be shown at SilverCity (Masonville Place) in a big, first-look North American screening on Friday at 7 p.m.

The film's Canadian distributor, Alliance Atlantis, is calling the SilverCity event "a special advance Canadian screening" -- and shying away from any talk of a premiere.

Buzz around the screening has invited guests including TV and film star Kiefer Sutherland, whose late grandfather was Saskatchewan premier and medicare founder Tommy Douglas.

An Alliance Atlantis representative said "don't know yet" about "any confirmed other guests."

But it is big. Moore and others involved are to be in London Friday. Moore is to meet the media in the afternoon. The screening will be followed by a private reception. .......(more)

2. I hope Kiefer's mom (Shirley Douglas) can come, too
She's done a lot to draw attention to the need to safeguard Canada's medicare system.

4. I guess Kiefer's dad, Donald Sutherland isn't worthy of a mention
Currently residing in the "where are they now?" file.

5. no insult meant to Donald, but Shirley D. did a pretty rousing speech ...
... at a "save Medicare" event in Victoria a couple of years back. She even offered to come to town to moderate a health care forum organized by the south Island NDP riding associations -- though unfortunately the date overlapped with a previous booking, so she gave us a "rain cheque". So I just assumed that she might be especially interested!

6. insurance town?
A lot of insurance and financial companies have offices around there. My cousin attended Western, and he commented on how people were jogging around campus in Midland-Walwyn sweatshirts, etc.

10. Cool.
You know, a lot of people make fun of London. They say it's "the city that never wakes".

But not me. Oh, no.

:D :hi:
