2.3 million Maytag/Jenn-Air Diswashers Recalled due to fire hazard
If you own one purchased between July 1997 and June 2001 you are one of 2.3 million people effected. They are being recalled due to a fire hazard. I know this isn't political but I thought it worth mentioning JIK anyone here owns one.

Consumers should immediately stop using these dishwashers, disconnect the electric supply by shutting off the fuse or circuit breaker controlling it and inform all users of the dishwasher about the risk of fire. Contact Maytag for either a free in-home repair, or a $75 cash back reimbursement following the purchase of a new Maytag®, Jenn-Air®, Whirlpool® or KitchenAid® dishwasher. Consumers should not return the dishwasher to the retailer where it was purchased, as retailers are not prepared to take units back.

Maytags site is down but you can find out if yours is on the list at the link below.

9. Welcome to DU!
If yours is on the list you get a $75 rebate if you purchase a new Maytag. That is if you plan on buying another Maytag. :)

8. Thanks. We've sometimes smelled smoke but could never
locate the source.

Unfortunately, ours is not on the list. Have mailed them and
asked.

12. Update
Since they are being flooded with request for service (I'd hate to process 2.3 million work orders) their system is down for further scheduling until later this evening or tomorrow.

Those who need to contact the recall center should call 1-800-675-0794.

13. If you run your dishwasher overnight like I do, this is very important
information to know. I always use the timed setting so the noisy machine just runs when I sleep...

I'm a turn it on before I leave for work person. I'm very happy mine never caught on fire and harmed my pets.

15. Article says the "liquid rinse aid" can leak....If you don't use the
"rinse aid" then maybe you don't have to throw out the diswasher?

Hazard: Liquid rinse-aid can leak from its dispenser and come into contact with the dishwasher’s internal wiring which can short-circuit and ignite, posing a fire hazard.

16. I wondered that too
I don't use the stuff but I did use the free one that came with the dishwasher when it was new. Either way they're offering to come and fix the problem for free so I don't plan to chunk it.

17. That was my first thought as well, but then...
...I took a look at our washer, and it occurred to me
that if that rinse-aid container is defective enough
to let rinse-aid leak OUT, I'm not going to assume that
it can keep all that high-temperature water from leaking -IN-
and causing the same problem.

Hey, they're willing to send someone to my house to fix it for FREE,
so why NOT take advantage of that? (Of course, since I'm usually
home all day every day, I recognize that this isn't as big of a hassle
for me as it is for people who have lives outside DU)
