What Are You Doing To Help Solve The Climate Crisis?
The petition I have up at Tree Nation is asking people to pledge to become climate messengers in response to Al Gore's movie and book An Inconvenient Truth, and has drawn signatures from around the world of those pledging to do just that. And for every 100 signatures, Tree Nation (which is also sponsored by the UNEP) has planted a tree in Niger in their goal to plant 8 million trees in the shape of a heart.

I want to show some of the responses (names withheld) to give you an understanding of what people globally are thinking and pledging to do because this damn well is important news. And these are just the signatures with comments. There are hundreds more from countries all over the world pledging to become climate messengers in response to Mr. Gore's environmental work, because this work is crucial to the sustainability of our planet. Therefore, I would also like to ask: What are you doing to solve this crisis? What are you doing to help him?

~~~~~
With the release of An Inconvenient Truth last May, Mr. Gore and the producers have managed to raise awareness of this crisis and our part in it to a level that will hopefully be sustained enough this year to warrant some real progress. This petition will be sent by me to Mr. Gore directly to Nashville, TN, U.S.A at the end of this month to show him the amount of support people have for his work on the climate crisis, and to show their signatures pledging to help him by becoming climate messengers and beginning the work necessary that must be done now to see positive change. We can all do it this year. This can be the year we finally show our Earth that we truly do care for her.
Please sign this petition for your planet and make a commitment you will never regret.
2007-06-01 World Clean Air Forest Initiative Toronto Canada / Bonjour from Canada/ The World Clean Air Forest Campaign is a multi-thousand member private citizen group in Canada and proud partner of the United Nations Environment Programme/ Billion Tree Campaign. We make the Pledge with great humility and congratulate you for responding to the "Truth Force" of Mr.Gore's crystal message. We Canadians stand as one lifeforce with your members to fuel that message to its univesial maturity and halt NOW the Climate Genocide flowing into our souls
2007-06-01 United States/ I pledge to my personal part and pass it forward
2007-05-19 United States/ Great initiative. We need to see more innovative approaches to global warming like this. Global warming is happening NOW, and at accelerating speed. Let us all act in the best interest of earth and our environment. (I will post this petition on some of the groups I am on in www.Care2.com to help spread the word).
2007-05-06 United States / I was always "aware" that the climate was being damaged. But last month I went to a lecture at Bellarmine University in Louisville where a women effectively showed the REAL damage being caused. I am left half-way speechless.I say half-way because I can no longer just be "aware", I now am forced to act. I wish more could know the truth. I think most just don't know.
2007-04-21 United Kingdom / If everyone who signs this petition makes one change in their lifestyle to help the planet it will help our children have a better future, goodluck x
2007-04-20 France/ Hy there! Hope governments as well as all of us will be able to save the planet! we need to act anyway!
2007-04-19 United States / I pledge to be more mindful of the earth than ever before this year, nurture nature, and hope to even plant one of these tree-nation trees independent of the trees planted in honor of this petition. Don't forget to S.I.N.G (Sympathize with all life, involve yourself, nurture nature, and not only grow more plants, but grow in spirit as well!), nature loves to hear it!
2007-04-18 United Kingdom / This is the only planet we has so isn't it in all our best interests to look after it! Work with the Earth and not against it! Be proud that we'll have something left for our future generations!!!
2007-04-17 United States / What a beautiful project and commitment, well worth any effort.
2007-04-16 United Kingdom / Your goal is just 1000 signatures? How about thinking big, how about going for 1 million or a billion? Just imagine - 1 billion custodians of mother earth creating a future for our children........... Keep up the great work - but think BIG; our Mother needs us! xxx
2007-04-06 Canada/ Thank you sooo much for doing this, i think this is one other great initiative towards the future of our earth and its population! Hopes up everyone!
2007-04-05 United States / I pledge to spread the word as much as possible!!
2007-04-03 United States / I've been working toward this goal for many years now. I pledge to continue my efforts for Mother Earth and all life upong it. Further I promise to work even harder to find more ways to help, spread the word and support those who have also committed to this most important endeavor.
2007-04-03 United States / I pledge to do as much as possible to save this planet.
2007-03-28 United States/ It is such an important issue for the present and the future. It affects all things living as well as the planets eco-system. We all need to do more to protect our children and their children. Wake Up and do your part! That's all that's asked of anyone.
2007-03-28 United States / I have been talking to anyone who will listen on this subject for some time now. I am terrified that we will have destroyed our planet before my son is old enough to really appreciate it. There is no reason for this. I signed Mr. Gore's petition when he went to Washington last week and I will continue to do what it takes to get this issue to take priority in this country.
2007-03-28 United States / So many people are in denial. My husband and I have been writing about these issues for several years now. To help our planet heal may be much tougher than most people think. The damage is deep and the solutions will take many sacrifices of changing our ways profoundly.
2007-03-27 United States / Thank you, Mr. Gore for the hard work and commitment you've shown to fighting for this cause. I pledge to do my part, too!
2007-03-27 United States/ I have been speaking on this subject since 1970. I plan to continue to live as lightly on the planet as I can.
2007-03-27 United States / There is a cancer growing on this planet and guess what folks, it's us. Which is more important, running around in your big SUV with the kids watching sponge Bob or having an environment and atmosphere that will support life for your kids and their kids. We can have it all but first we have figure a way to do it without oil. Here's an idea, why don't we take that hundred billion that move-on wants to give Bush for the war effort and give it all to researching a way out of this mess. WAR NO MORE
2007-03-25 United States/ If we could treat our tree's and our air like our drinking water. We might slow down enough to actually enjoy the journey of life.........
2007-03-24 United States / OUr environment means every thing ! The climate must be taken care of Air is our lifeforce. Along with the other elements of life....water and soil. Trees are a must to purify the air by making air.
2007-03-22 Canada/ we are killing our mother...
2007-03-15 United States/ Trees also give us fresh water, as forests seed clouds by transpiration and the streams and rivers from the forests are among the purest fresh waters on Earth. We can't live without trees.
2007-03-21 Canada/ Enough with the denial!Humans destroy habitats by pumping nasties into the atmosphere on a daily basis. How bad do the disasters have to get before the world wakes up & takes some positive action for change?
2007-03-20 United States / I do all that I can to help the planet and the species on it. I also encourage others to do the same by being a role modle for change. I recycle my own things, my mothers, my co-workers. I'm going to the recycle center anyway so I take thier things too. My yard is organic and critter friendly. I plant more things every year and plan to put in a water feature. I participate in environmental clean ups. I sign petitions. I do fund raisers. I teach children to value nature.
2007-03-20 United States/ The polar bears are starving and drowning because their ice is melting. Will someone please help them! Julia
2007-03-20 United States/ Mother earth needs our help now and it's time for us the people of the world to give it back by, planting trees and other important things for mother earth. We the people only "CAN" only safe mother earth. Each of us have responsiblities to do good things for mother earth. Please do your share.
2007-03-20 United States/ To me, this is my religion...My love and respect for our Mother Earth...and just like anyone else's religion, it is my duty to spread the "word" to others, that we all need to unite as one and take better care of our blessed Earth, to prevent Global Warming.
2007-03-20 United States/ Treat Mother Earth with Respect...Plant Trees... Help Keep Forests Alive
2007-03-19 Spain/ We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children. Native American Proverb
2007-03-19 United States/ Save this earth for all future life to enjoy!!! Stop destroying its beauty and save the wolves from aeriel gunning in alaska and save the animals and planet!!! These things and more should never be said but it appears to me that they need to be. When will people learn?
2007-03-19 new delhi India/ we are the ones who destroyed our mother nature and now if we have to survive we have to take care of our mother so i pledge to help save our beautiful planet
2007-03-19 United States/ The problem is that not nearly enough people believe this is a man made problem - but IT IS - and only by changing can this be stopped . To put it in terms some may understand our Beautiful mother earth is our fish tank ! If we dont keep her clean and free of pollution and kept at a proper temperature With fresh plants & oxygen all life in it will perish ! If humans dont fix the problem they will kill us all & Gods innocent creatures as well ! WAKE UP ! All of us can do somthing to help !!!!!
2007-03-19 Netherlands/Plant more trees if you can, try to bike more and do not invest in new cars.
2007-03-19 United States/Keep on planting trees; 25+ feet apart, shade trees in shade, sun trees in sun, food trees for wildlife, water trees in wet areas, lots of maple, oak, ash and cedar, shade cloth if needed and water well for the first 2-3 years.
2007-03-19 United States/ I will do everything to help Mother Earth. Educating the masses is a must!
2007-03-19 United States/ I will do all I can to do my part!!!
2007-03-19 United States/ I think in order to be a climate messenger 2 things are necessary: 1) make an effort to live as sustainably as possible (not walking the walk is a little disingenuous) and 2) spread info about the dangers of global warming AND the great chance we now have to work for a better world. Often it's not just indifference when people don't take action but also lack of knowledge.
2007-03-08 United States/ How can man as an intelligent being allow another to slaughter these precious animals of the sea. The dolphins have an intelligence comaprable to our own.....Is man trying to kill off an animal that is so much like him and eventually mankind too? The time has come for all countries to put extreme pressure on Japan & other countries involved in the killing of dolphins & whales. These killing are not morally right no matter how one looks at it.....STOP THE KILLINGS!
2007-03-19 United States/ We have already changed our entire way of Life. As Native American/Met'is, I am proud of my culture which loves and respects ALL of Mother Earth and Creator's "Art work."
2007-03-19 United States/ Beat the Heat member, energy subcommittee, using LED lights where I can.
2007-03-19 Mexico/ I've planted dozens of trees, and I intend to plant many more.
2007-03-19 Mexico/ Hopefully we dont only sign petitions to save owr mother land, our big house, but really change our behavior and our way of living.
2007-03-19 United States/ I'm a vegan and try to make my footprint on our mother Earth as small as possible. It does little good to plant trees when there is massive deforestation in other parts of the world so that people can enjoy a big mac or blow their nose in a kleenex. Massive changes need to be made. Wake up people!
2007-03-19 United States / I have a very small yard and even I have planted 4 trees and two shrubs since living here so there is no excuse for everyone to not plant at least one tree because I truly believe trees are the answere to solving the global warming issue.
2007-03-19 United States/ without trees, our air quality is going to get worse. will you miss the rustle of the leaves during springtime rains??? I know i would
2007-03-19 United States/ Nothing is more important for all of us than preserving and rebuilding the damage we've done to our beloved world.
2007-03-19 Queensland Australia/ as john lennon would say POWER TO THE PEOPLE
2007-03-18 Canada/ Too late, but I'll sign out of a desperate hope
2007-03-18 Manila Philippines, The / This is worthwhile cause. I hope people inthis world should plant trees.. even once in his/her lifetime and that would mean a billion trees. I do hope also that loggers close to politicians in the Philippines stop!!! cutting trees.
2007-03-18 United States/ This is truly a global concern and must be a global effort.
2007-03-18 United States/ I've noticed something that few people pay much attention to and that is the cutting of "millions" of trees everywhere on an annual bases. "Christmas" trees are grown by the millions every year without regard to how important they would be if we wouldn't cut them for cosmetics and a fire hazard that sits in our homes each year. As long as people keep buying them they will continue to be chopped down. What a shame on us to continue this practice, and what a blessing it would be to let them "live".
2007-03-18 Canada / It takes more than just trees! We need to cut down on ALL petro-chemical products, plastics is an easy place to start, bring your own cotton shopping bags to do your groceries!
2007-03-18 Melbourne Australia/ Mother Earth is an intelligent system and will cleanse herself leading up to 2012 and beyond. Now it is inevitable...
2007-03-18 United States/ We're destroying Mother Earth daily. Please help replenish her by planting a tree!
2007-03-18 Sofia Bulgaria/ If we don't keep and look after our Planet, our Home, who will?!
2007-03-18 Canada/ We can and should do better in this fight, let's keep on going !
2007-03-18 United States/ Do we not see the parakeets dying? It is time to act in ways that may help change the current atmospheric trend. We have but ourselves as weapons in this battle. Suit up friends and change the way you live.
2007-03-18 United States/ The planet will survive in any case. It's about us.
2007-03-18 United States/ I live as green a lifestyle as I can; I spread awareness online; I sign petitions; II LOVE earth and I my frist love as a child was NATURE and the wild- it breaks my heart to see this happening and I am eager to see the beautiful nature lands thrive, and hopefully, grow bigger than they've been for decades!!!
2007-03-18 United States/ I have planted trees for many years, each one of us CAN make a difference, one tree at a time!
2007-03-18 United States/ No one knows how much time we have to stop the damage and to try to correct damage done. It could be Now or Never. Is it worth gambling on this? I THINK NOT.
2007-03-18 United States/ Plant trees and try and help save a few from clear cutting. They help clense the air that sustains all living life.
2007-03-18 United States/ Let's try to live more humble and more green for Mother Earth. She may well destroy people, but, She will continue on with new Earthlings.
2007-03-18 United States/ We must do all that we can NOW to make the world sustainable for years to come!!
2007-03-18 Beirut Lebanon/ We need to face the reality and help the future of our children.
2007-03-17 North Pole United States/ It is imperative we all wake up to these realities fast. One of the greatest dangers to our planet are the nature of war. Modern War with modern weapons is pollution and destruction on a scale never before seen. It is critical these issues be resolved before they escalate to unthinkable magnitude!
2007-03-16 United States/ It's vital to get off the "destructive" path, and create a new "productive" one. The world must focus and collaborate together to develope solutions, and strive to protect our planet and all of our resources. Let's not waste precious time arguing over issues, Let's resolve them!
2007-03-15 Scania Sweden/ Thanks - I pledge to work in the spirit of Al Gore's, continuing my promoting of Lester R Brown's Plan B 2.0 and my long-time support of tree-planting and tree-rescuing with The Eden-foundation in Zahout/Niger and the Swedish part of the Green Belt Movement, called Vi-skogen (=Our forest), and the Swed. Soc. f. Nature Cons., which also works for the old large forests in the north. I hope Tree Nation will learn the direct seeding method of draught resistant trees and plants used by Eden foundation
2007-03-14 United States / Far too many people are still so very ignorant of the importance of trees to the environment , to wildlife , and to humans , themselves . Ge the word out .
2007-03-14 United States / The message that I will try to weave into my communication about this is Al Gore's statement that our old habits plus new technology is the best way to create substantial change. It makes change feasible and less intimidating to people who don't want our world to change.
2007-03-14 Canada/ Please, for the sake of generations to come, of persons and nature and mammals, please tell your neighbours of what we all know is happening to our planet. If we don't change out ATTITUDES NOW... by the year 2065, scientists like Dr. David Suzuki and his foundation, have forcast, the planet of Earth as we know it, will be at it's end. Please, spread your educated knowlege. Let's leave a world behind for our grandchildrens' grandchildren to enjoy.
2007-03-11 United States/ Thank you for everything you have done. Please continue to promote energy conservation and clean sustainable energy creation. Climate Change is moving too fast for any of us to delay taking every action possible to mitigate our share of the damage done to all of creation. Going Carbon Neutral is not enough. It is merely a good start.
2007-03-10 United States/ Thank you for caring about the next generation!
2007-03-09 United States/ Even with Al Gore's movie, many people still do not believe that the climate change is a result of man-made activities. We need to constantly work to find ways to help others understand the affects and importance of climate change, and what we can do to make a difference.
2007-03-07 Spain / P.A.T.C.H is a beautiful initiative that everyone should support. It will only bring us positive things, and in such away that we can all work together, no matter who we are. is asking people to pledge to become climate messengers and has drawn signatures from around the world. I want to show some of the responses (names withheld) to give you an understanding of what people globally are thinking and pledging to do because this damn well is important news. 2007-03-19 United States/ Beat the Heat member, energy subcommittee, using LED lights where I can.
2007-03-19 Mexico/ I've planted dozens of trees, and I intend to plant many more.
2007-03-19 Mexico/ Hopefully we dont only sign petitions to save owr mother land, our big house, but really change our behavior and our way of living.
2007-03-19 United States/ I'm a vegan and try to make my footprint on our mother Earth as small as possible. It does little good to plant trees when there is massive deforestation in other parts of the world so that people can enjoy a big mac or blow their nose in a kleenex. Massive changes need to be made. Wake up people!
2007-03-19 United States / I have a very small yard and even I have planted 4 trees and two shrubs since living here so there is no excuse for everyone to not plant at least one tree because I truly believe trees are the answere to solving the global warming issue.
2007-03-19 United States/ without trees, our air quality is going to get worse. will you miss the rustle of the leaves during springtime rains??? I know i would
2007-03-19 United States/ Nothing is more important for all of us than preserving and rebuilding the damage we've done to our beloved world.
2007-03-19 Queensland Australia/ as john lennon would say POWER TO THE PEOPLE
2007-03-18 Canada/ Too late, but I'll sign out of a desperate hope
2007-03-18 Manila Philippines, The / This is worthwhile cause. I hope people inthis world should plant trees.. even once in his/her lifetime and that would mean a billion trees. I do hope also that loggers close to politicians in the Philippines stop!!! cutting trees.
2007-03-18 United States/ This is truly a global concern and must be a global effort.
2007-03-18 United States/ I've noticed something that few people pay much attention to and that is the cutting of "millions" of trees everywhere on an annual bases. "Christmas" trees are grown by the millions every year without regard to how important they would be if we wouldn't cut them for cosmetics and a fire hazard that sits in our homes each year. As long as people keep buying them they will continue to be chopped down. What a shame on us to continue this practice, and what a blessing it would be to let them "live".
2007-03-18 Canada / It takes more than just trees! We need to cut down on ALL petro-chemical products, plastics is an easy place to start, bring your own cotton shopping bags to do your groceries!
2007-03-18 Melbourne Australia/ Mother Earth is an intelligent system and will cleanse herself leading up to 2012 and beyond. Now it is inevitable...
2007-03-18 United States/ We're destroying Mother Earth daily. Please help replenish her by planting a tree!
2007-03-18 Sofia Bulgaria/ If we don't keep and look after our Planet, our Home, who will?!
2007-03-18 Canada/ We can and should do better in this fight, let's keep on going !
2007-03-18 United States/ Do we not see the parakeets dying? It is time to act in ways that may help change the current atmospheric trend. We have but ourselves as weapons in this battle. Suit up friends and change the way you live.
2007-03-18 United States/ The planet will survive in any case. It's about us.
2007-03-18 United States/ I live as green a lifestyle as I can; I spread awareness online; I sign petitions; II LOVE earth and I my frist love as a child was NATURE and the wild- it breaks my heart to see this happening and I am eager to see the beautiful nature lands thrive, and hopefully, grow bigger than they've been for decades!!!
2007-03-18 United States/ I have planted trees for many years, each one of us CAN make a difference, one tree at a time!
2007-03-18 United States/ No one knows how much time we have to stop the damage and to try to correct damage done. It could be Now or Never. Is it worth gambling on this? I THINK NOT.
2007-03-18 United States/ Plant trees and try and help save a few from clear cutting. They help clense the air that sustains all living life.
2007-03-18 United States/ Let's try to live more humble and more green for Mother Earth. She may well destroy people, but, She will continue on with new Earthlings.
2007-03-18 United States/ We must do all that we can NOW to make the world sustainable for years to come!!
2007-03-18 Beirut Lebanon/ We need to face the reality and help the future of our children.
2007-03-17 North Pole United States/ It is imperative we all wake up to these realities fast. One of the greatest dangers to our planet are the nature of war. Modern War with modern weapons is pollution and destruction on a scale never before seen. It is critical these issues be resolved before they escalate to unthinkable magnitude!
2007-03-16 United States/ It's vital to get off the "destructive" path, and create a new "productive" one. The world must focus and collaborate together to develope solutions, and strive to protect our planet and all of our resources. Let's not waste precious time arguing over issues, Let's resolve them!
2007-03-15 Scania Sweden/ Thanks - I pledge to work in the spirit of Al Gore's, continuing my promoting of Lester R Brown's Plan B 2.0 and my long-time support of tree-planting and tree-rescuing with The Eden-foundation in Zahout/Niger and the Swedish part of the Green Belt Movement, called Vi-skogen (=Our forest), and the Swed. Soc. f. Nature Cons., which also works for the old large forests in the north. I hope Tree Nation will learn the direct seeding method of draught resistant trees and plants used by Eden foundation
2007-03-14 United States / Far too many people are still so very ignorant of the importance of trees to the environment , to wildlife , and to humans , themselves . Ge the word out .
2007-03-14 United States / The message that I will try to weave into my communication about this is Al Gore's statement that our old habits plus new technology is the best way to create substantial change. It makes change feasible and less intimidating to people who don't want our world to change.
2007-03-14 Canada/ Please, for the sake of generations to come, of persons and nature and mammals, please tell your neighbours of what we all know is happening to our planet. If we don't change out ATTITUDES NOW... by the year 2065, scientists like Dr. David Suzuki and his foundation, have forcast, the planet of Earth as we know it, will be at it's end. Please, spread your educated knowlege. Let's leave a world behind for our grandchildrens' grandchildren to enjoy.
2007-03-11 United States/ Thank you for everything you have done. Please continue to promote energy conservation and clean sustainable energy creation. Climate Change is moving too fast for any of us to delay taking every action possible to mitigate our share of the damage done to all of creation. Going Carbon Neutral is not enough. It is merely a good start.
2007-03-10 United States/ Thank you for caring about the next generation!
2007-03-09 United States/ Even with Al Gore's movie, many people still do not believe that the climate change is a result of man-made activities. We need to constantly work to find ways to help others understand the affects and importance of climate change, and what we can do to make a difference.
2007-03-07 Spain / P.A.T.C.H is a beautiful initiative that everyone should support. It will only bring us positive things, and in such away that we can all work together, no matter who we are.
~~~~~~

What these comments tell me is that no one election or office is going to stop this from happening now. It will require a global effort on the part of citizens to not only change their lifestyles in ways that enhance progress, but also in people demanding change in governments to appeal to the deepest level of Reason across the board across the world in dealing with this crisis NOW. It will not be solved with sound bites.

The time has come to stand up and say, I heard you Mr. Gore and I am ready to do MY part. Unfortunately, to state that on a blog of this nature without the usual political cheerleading regarding him usually gets you nothing in the way of sincere responses regarding the fate of this world, and to me that is sad. However, the world is not waiting for an "election" in the United States or anywhere else to do what it needs to do to purge us from it.

We have done tremendous damage to the ecosystems that sustain us and only we can now work to fix that which has not been totally destroyed. I only hope that those in this world like myself who are sincere in doing so don't get drowned out by the political operatives, media hacks, and government/corporate scheisters who to this day are doing nothing of real substance to face this crisis that is indeed real and indeed escalating.

We need to be our own leaders on this to tip the scales in favor of change to move us away from the tipping point we are rapidly approaching. And I fear that if it doesn't happen soon, we will never be able to atone for this to our children regardless of who we "vote" for.

1. I've been doing my part long before it became popular:
* walking when possible
* consolidating driving
* insulating
* recycling
* not wasting electricity, which includes living with one monitor powered on at one time and I don't use needless appliances in the background when I'm not paying attention to them...

4.  Fantastic, and me too
This has been a way of life for me since I was a young child. And I have always loved trees and fervently believe that planting them not cutting them down for sport is a great part of mitigating the CO2 in our atmosphere besides working to put less in it in the first place. Deforestation is the greatest cause of this crisis.

2. It's a good idea to list the things we are doing, so that we can share
I'll say right up front that I know I'm not doing enough. However, I am trying.

I walk when I can, don't use the air-conditioning or heat in my apartment except when absolutely necessary, air-dry my clothes as much as possible, never use the dishwasher (hand washing instead), don't eat meat, buy organic whenever possible, use products that harm the environment as little as possible (including household cleaners, soap, shampoo, lotion, toothpaste, deodorant, etc.), recycle carefully, eat in restaurants that offer locally-grown food prepared with simple ingredients, rarely buy processed junk food, buy local as much as possible, contribute to environmental causes, always vote and always vote Democratic (I wish I had Socialist options but I don't here in the south), and try to encourage others to do likewise.

It's little enough, and I know that I'm very lucky to even have these options. Lots of people don't even have the choice to do without air-conditioning, much less clean water.

And you are so right, so many in this world live with so little because they have no other choice. That is why I do not believe a little sacrifice on our part is bad because we can all afford to do something. I wish more peopel do it out os common sense, and thank you for repsonding to this. At least you are doing something and maybe somem good ideas can come from this.

9. Why? The statement is absolutely self-evident
If it hadn't been for the gas and oil industry teaming up with the automakers in the early part of this century, helped along by politicians bought and sold, we wouldn't have cars as we know them today. We'd have small, efficient electric vehicles and lots and lots of public transportation.

Instead, we got what we got. I own and use a car, but I have no illusions about it.

- I NEVER run the air conditioner or the heater if possible (and I live in Southern California... no heater necessary)

16. Partial zero emissions
Some states like California require this rating (or the ultra low emission - ULEV rating) on newer cars. It means that the car basically emits next to no pollution into the air.

14. Driving no more than necessary
recycling
bringing my own bags to the store
reusing things that might have been recycled or thrown out before
heat is set to lower temp, AC to higher temp
buying locally grown/organic food whenever I can
Not buying new items unless I truly need something new. Reusing, buying used, making do without. My grandma (lived through the depression) had a decorative pillow that said, "Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without". I'm trying to live by that as much as I can. People are addicted to just buying new garbage all the time. The new garbage is mostly made out of petroleum products, their creation causes environmental problems, their shipping uses petroleum and creates pollution, and then the stuff eventually gets thrown out, plus the older (and often still usable) item is thrown out to make room for the new stuff.

17. Not much.
Unless our society is redesigned to greatly reduce the use of automobiles, jet airplanes and electricity anything I do as an individual will not make any real differense. Only nation-wide, mass action will matter. In the meantime I still need to make a living and generally participate in society. I'm not willing to be a martyr just to make a symbolic point.

19. I meant it figuratively.
There are no alternate means here. It is too spread-out for walking or even cycling in a reasonable amount of time. Even if I could, I would be too sweaty when I got to work for office decorum. Besides, for one third of the year it is too cold for either. What is more, I'm not going to risk my neck cycling on public roads with drivers used to thinking of bikes as toys that belong on the sidewalk. For cycling to be accepted as legitimate transportation, more people need to use it. We won't, however, until it is safe to use and distances make it a little more practical.

I would rather not be a sanctimonious, holier-than-driver snob. I already explained why it is impractical to cycle to work. If by coward you mean I won't take a chance getting run over, well that's true. It is a decision based on fact, not on subjective fear. You may as well say Bush is a coward for not invading North Korea.

As an example of people losing all manners over the internet, had you called me a coward to my face, you would be in danger of losing teeth.

Your post said that fear of traffic is one of the reasons you don't use a bicycle. I don't know or care where you live but I find it difficult to believe that none of the places you go are within cycling distance. If I'm wrong about that I apologize and I truly feel sorry for you.

Peace.

45. I don't really need your sorrow.
After all, I'm not the one asking internet users for advice on addiction treatment. I live here, you don't. The grocery store probably is in cycling distance at least in the summer when it is dry and daylight lasts a long time. Unfortunately, there is no place for the groceries. And there is still not way to get there without risking traffic on a major road. I used to cycle back and forth to work over several miles when in high school, often at night and in retrospect I can't believe I was stupid enough to risk it. Plus that was back East where there are hills.

Fortunately, I don't need anyone else's approval to drive to places.

You certainly don't have to martyr yourself. All any of us can do is what works in our lives. If everyone does a little bit, it'll make a bigger difference overall than if a few people do everything.

or something like that. I think that Winston Churchill said that.

Anyway, I'm certainly no martyr. As I said upthread, all the minimal things I do to reduce global warming directly contribute to my own health and well-being.

My definition of martyr is sitting around eating pork rinds while watching TV and then driving three blocks to pick up another case of beer and a couple hot dogs. That's being a martyr to the corporations that want to sell us crap.

23. Do not own a car, (never did) travel mostly by public transportation,
Distant travel by train (haven't flown since 1980.)

Red meat consumption down to 2-6 meals per month. Recycle. Turn off lights and appliances when not in use. Line-dry clothes when possible. Half light bulbs are compact F. Electricity comes from hydro-power.

Wear things out. Haven't bought new clothing item in three years. (ok, underpants) prefer old, used items. Clean with non-toxic Items, (vinegar, orange, borax, bio-degradable soap, but still use unscented laundry detergent) ditto for grooming products, soap, shampoo, etc.

Do not replace household items to keep up with fashion.

Buy local food, for the most part. (NEVER out of season produce from, say, Chile, which is unripe and most likely treated with fungicides and banned (US) pesticides. Purchase items with least packaging, buy organic wherever possible ( about 40%)

Other stuff.

24. I've written a book as well
worked on it for about six years now, it's an adventure story, partially autobiographical, of my time in Alaska during the 70's when I flew all over the upper half of Alaska looking for Uranium by Helicopter, with a mobile camp and a bunch of Vietnam Vet Pilots. Lots of adventures in the bush, but in the end, there's a realization, sort of a spiritualization of the ecosystem, by the protaganist - he's been turned onto the concept of "The Jesus Bolt" - that one piece of metal in a chopper that holds all the Blades on the machine, when that falls out, the next person you'll be talking to is Jesus, Himself..

The overarching metaphor of the jesus bolt, that there's one thing that hold it all together, the Universe, the ecosystems, and the protaganist, himself.

As in the book, I personally SAW the beginnings of global warming up there, as well as the decimationn of Creatures and Native by corrupt Oil Companies.

It's a hell of a read, and I'm approaching agents, and some Hollywood folks before publishing, but to Spiritualize the Environmental movement, without being preachy is the root of the book.

So there's what I can do, hope folks go for it in a big way, I think it may just change a Lot of Minds, a way to reach Joe Sixpack, and dispel the notion of Earth Folks as being SISSIES. :)

from the utility grid.
I am an electrician and I remodel older homes.I replace the existing lighting fixtures with low voltage and/or low wattage bulbs.I also install dimmers to cut the lighting load even more.
I have also gotten the contractors I work for to sell low energy high efficiency appliances.One easy way to save energy is to switch to instahot water heaters.These only use power when hot water is used.
As soon as I pass my low voltage masters license test I plan on going into solar and other alternative power generation.

I live in less than a 500 sq/ft apartment and my major power consumption are the PC and a desk lamp on average $15:00USD/m. I chose my apartment because I can get ANYTHING I need within two miles. Beyond that, I'm only 15 miles away from my 86 y/o parents. And if you aren't taking care of your parents, think about that! OK, let's go from there! I drive a POS 98 Honda and can get better than the EPA mileage by at least 15% under the worst conditions. You posted a long screed trying to make your point and I understand what you're trying to say. My argument with your post is that it's completely one-sided, longer than it needs to be, and the objective and conclusions you are trying to support.

30. I second that. Posts that long, I don't even read.
That being said, I bicycle when practical, have been replacing my bulbs with CFs, use ceiling fans instead of the AC except on very hot days, my car gets great mileage, have been planting a great leafy garden, too!

31. Well you sound miserable doing it...
This also wasn't a "screed" it was a listing in between my comments of people who had responded regarding this crisis, and you certainly had the option to not read it.

29. a couple things!
- I do not own a car, I take the DC Metro and walk anytime I can, avoiding taxis at all costs.
- I recently planted a big leafy garden.
- I have only ONE efficient lightbulb on and only in the room I'm in.

35. It is about choices
And it is good to read about others who are making good ones. Thank you to those who responded here in earnest about what they are doing. It gives a bit more hope than I had.

39. I also have a garden, no lawn at all. No energy consumed to cut it,
no chemicals to maintain it. Just garden, decks and gravel.

34. Among other things, I am fortunate to be able to work from home,
so my "commute" entails walking down the stairs. Yeah, occasionaly I have to drive to meet with a client, but it's probab;u pm;u 4-5 times a month.

Plus, I recycle.

And, when my knees aren't behaving badly, I walk to the store.

41. Gave up driving many years ago

I prefer to pedal. It's better for my health, the environment and my savings. I deliberatly moved into my neighborhood for access. For groceries, I use string bags, which some check-out people hate. When they grumble, I tell them their plastic bags are made from petroleum, which a war was started to steal. Any appliance not in use is unplugged to spare electricity wasted on stand-by power. During high summer, I only use the air conditioning for sleeping. For the waking hours, I'll use a fan. And recycling.

I'd like to grow some of my own food. There's a community garden a few block away. When I went looking for a hardware store to buy a couple hand tools, they'd been closed and turned into restaurants. I guess I'll have to buy them online, but I think it's too late for this season.

42. Nowhere as much as I should be doing that much I am sure of :-/

Here is what I do:

I walk to work usually and don't own a car.

I have been vegetarian for 5+ years.

I have always used as little electricity as I can get by with. As a nice bonus, my heat and electricity bills are pretty low.

I eat organic as much as possible. I have not been very good about buying local as much as possible, cutting down on foods that are associated with huge carbon footprints (I love avocados :(). This where not having a car has been tricky. Most small farms in my area are far from where I live.

I don't shop much and am fairly frugal overall.

I use seventh generation brand of toilet and kitchen paper and cleaning supplies.

I try to give my business to companies with greener track records.

Oh and I donate as much as I can to enviro groups and causes.

Where I am bad:
Alcohol is something I do buy more than I should-the bottles add up over the course of a month. I feel bad about this since the recycling facilities near where I live are less than stellar.

I use my computer a lot both for research and random stuff like DU and I do own a tv and pay for cable. We probably use our tv on average for about 2 hours a day.

I use the AC sometimes when it gets very hot-try to minimize it but I am very sensitive to the heat.

The worst part is my job-I am a research scientist in a lab and we go through a fair amount by way of gloves, eppendorfs, plastic so on :-/. It is deafness research though so maybe the good and the bad cancel out a bit :shrug:.

46. Eating less meat, drying clothes outside, CFLs inside...
reusing plastic bags and other bags. Keeping a bucket in the shower and putting the water that flows until the water is warm enough back into the garden. Working at home. When I used to live in a real place as opposed to a depressing housing tract, I could walk or bike almost everywhere. It was also a delight to see the different styles of homes and live near coffeehouses, bookstores (before Amazon and Borders killed them).
