Buzzflash: Wings of Justice Honoree, Mario Gallegos, Jr.
BuzzFlash has warned again and again that the Republicans are not stopping their efforts to steal the 2008 election through a variety of undemocratic methods, including the suppression of votes. Greg Palast has also weighed in on this with a great deal of corroborating evidence.

Nothing proves this theory more than the fact that the U.S. Attorneys put into place largely to concoct flimsy charges of voter fraud -- to smear minority voters and help pass new "Jim Crow" laws in states -- are still in their positions.

Meanwhile, states with Republican legislatures are scrambling to past onerous voter registration and polling place "verification" requirements designed to keeps tens of thousands of Democrats from ever voting.

The Texas legislature recently tried to pass a "Jim Crow" bill to keep minorities from voting. Their effort didn't succeed because of the valiant and courageous efforts of Democratic State Senator Mario Gallegos, Jr.

1. During the seige of the Alamo the commanding officer, legend has it, drew a line in the sand
and asked those who wanted to stay and face death to cross over. Jim Bowie was ill and asked his comrades to carry him in his bed across the line. Texas now has a new hero. Senator Gallegos, although seriously ill, ignored his doctors' advice in order to defend Texans' right to vote from his sickbed in the Senate chamber. And this story is true. http://www.news8austin.com/content/your_news/default.asp?ArID=184658

2. thanks for the link!
From that article:

It's not unusual to find empty seats inside the senate chambers. What is unusual is to find a hospital bed.

"As long as I'm here they can't pass it," Sen. Mario Gallegos, D-Houston, said in regards to House Bill 218 which would require anyone who wants to vote in Texas to present a valid ID.

According to his doctors State Sen. Gallegos shouldn't even be in Austin. But, if he had followed their advice that would mean a win for the Republicans.

"I'm the eleventh vote on the blockage of 218, the voter ID bill," Sen. Gallegos said.

The only way Democrats can stop the bill is if they all vote together.

"Right now, thank God, I'm not ill enough that I can't come over here and stand on my own two feet and represent my community," Sen. Gallegos said.
