Iraqi PM: U.S. Troop Surge Thwarted Civil War

(CBS News)

"If the Baghdad security plan had not been implemented, we would have a true civil war in Iraq,” Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said.

But Iraqis on the streets of Baghdad say security is worse. Murders went down, but they are coming up back up again. There are still bombs every day. What's al-Maliki's sense of the quality of life to Iraqi people?

"There are great shortages in Baghdad because it's the capital and it faces the greatest terrorist threat," he told Logan.

Meanwhile, CBS News national security correspondent David Martin reports that all the troops for the surge are now in Iraq and U.S. military officers say American casualties are likely to go still higher when operations hit full throttle next month.

Compounding that grim forecast, Stephen Biddle, an adviser to the American commander in Iraq, says the odds against success are long.

"If I had to put a number to it, maybe it's a 1-in-10, maybe it's a 1-in-5 long shot if we play our cards right. There's no question that this is likelier to fail than succeed as this point," Biddle said.

11. Yes you are right. By September there will be another boogie man

to contend with. Maybe it will be an additional troop surge to keep the supposed "controlled" civil war in check. Maybe it will be to hunt for Osama; which the GOPig candiates belleve is in Iraq.

Your guess is as good as mine, but Prezdent Monkeynuts will find a way to increase the troop size while his repubbie supporters continue their RW circlejerk.

4. Right now they just have a fake civil war.
Poor Maliki. The Iraqi people think he's a dipshit idiot; the majority of the world think he's a dipshit idiot.

Well gee, that's what happens when you are a dipshit idiot shilling for the bush regime.

7. Yeah, it thwarted a civil war by uniting the Shia and Sunni against us
Sunni Resistance Receptive to Sadr Alliance Based on Ending Occupation
Gareth Porter, Electronic Iraq, 24 May 2007

WASHINGTON (IPS) - Nationalist Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr's bid to unite Sunnis and Shiites on the basis of a common demand for withdrawal of U.S. occupation forces, reported last weekend by the Washington Post's Sudarsan Raghavan, seems likely to get a positive response from Sunni armed resistance.

8. Sheesh, so how bad would things be if there WERE a civil war there?
Seriously, how much worse could it possibly be? And what good are our armed forces doing there?

12. They're already test-driving the spin for later use in September
when no other results can be announced except that although the Surge didn't reduce the amount of violence, it stopped the violence that otherwise would have surely existed.
