(Cross posting http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=439x341039">from GD because this is a must hear interview from a very brave woman who most likely has death squads hunting her right now)

Shahira Amin resigned from Nile TV because of their coverage of the protests - she spoke live to Al Jazeera English. She was the deputy head of the station.

(NBC) On Thursday, a broadcaster on state-controlled Nile TV, Shahira Amin, said she had resigned because it was being used as a "propaganda machine."

"I am not going to feed the public lies," she told Al-Jazeera English. "They are not showing what's happening in Tahrir Square. People are dying here, everything is distorted."

1. That's Ted Turner, isn't it? I wonder when that photo was taken. Does CNN have a close relationship
with Nile TV?

9. Anderson Cooper just interviewed he but cut her short so he could talk to someone from HRW
Human Rights Watch. Unfortunately he only gave her about 2 minutes before he went to the HRW woman, and her Skype connection went wobbly so it ended up being a waste of a really valuable interview.

I can't wait to read any articles she writes about her experiences Shahira.

Thank you for the K&R.

10. With luck, this story will catch fire and everybody will want to interview her.
That will certainly protect her, if she's in the international spotlight, but will also get this important story out there... Great stuff! :applause: :hi:

11. Rachel Maddow also reported on this story.
She only had the voice-over interview, no film footage, but she told this woman's story and sang her praises. :)

13. Great idea!
I left the TV on, so saw it a second time and Rachel was really taken with this lady and her story. I wouldn't be surprised if she followed up on it... :D :fistbump: :hi:

15. The reporter was amazingly hostile
I think Shahira Amin was amazing, especially since almost every question tried to condemn her as corrupt or complicit.

whistle blowers typically do have dirt on them, they rarely rise to where they can see the real picture without falling a bit to the day to day easy path of corruption. When reporters show such a strong bias and pursue the whistle blower with the overwhelming majority of their questions, they end up making the story more about the whistle blower and their possible flaws than about the article at hand. She had to defend herself in front of this reporter over and over. I wish we could have spent a bit more time investigating the story than we spent investigating the source.

As it was, the questions felt like a prosecuting attorney grilling a defense witness.

Here we have pretty apparent corruption and a whistle blower with some experience and connection, and the reporter diminished the potential social value. Who knew that Shepherd Smith had a twin working for Al Jazeera English.

17. Aamazingly hostile? Maybe you're not used to reporters asking follow up questions & prefer softball?
I thought he did a great job.

Remember Al Jazeera have been under attack from the dictatorship and Nile TV for days and she had literally just resigned and immediately called AJE, so there was bound to be an element of suspicion.
