The unemployment benefits vote
By Laura Conaway - Thu Nov 18, 2010 8:23 PM EST
A measure to extend unemployment benefits for the long-term unemployed failed in the House today by a vote of 258 to 154. This marks the first time Congress has refused to extend benefits when the unemployment rate was higher than 7.2 percent -- it now stands at 9.6 percent.

she explains things. If my right-leaning brother would watch her, i think he would start to see the error of his ways, instead he just discredits her with his father-in-law's talking points .. ..as far and this piece, on the dems getting a spine, i'll withhold judgement because sometimes that just do stuff for show so they can later say they tried. Sad that we can't trust 'em, but whataya gonna do?

6. If we use "spinefulness" regularly, it goes into the OED.
Which would be nice.

7. Good news. Thanks to Rachel for telling this story.
And thanks to the Democrats in Congress who "got it" -- at least this time.

Most of the split between the so-called "left" of the Democratic Party and the right-wing sell-outs in the Democratic Party is about courage and strategy, not about goals or even whether compromise is sometimes necessary.

What the so-called "left" wants is a party that wears its ideals proudly. Yes, compromises can be necessary. But stand for what you believe in and THEN, AND ONLY THEN, compromise without groveling.

8. If you're too young to remember
the Vietnam War, and specifically the anti-war movement, bear with me. Protests went on for years but there was a turning point when Nixon ordered troops into Cambodia. That was the tipping point---there were fervent anti-war rallies and it seemed (my memory) that the tide turned against the war and people stood up and said "we won't support this anymore." Perhaps this recent election was a similar turning point where progressives and other thoughtful individuals will say "these Republican policies are a sham". And "they say they want deficit cuts but actually propose budget-busting tax cuts and programs, so they are liars." Like John Lennon said "war is over, if you want it". Perhaps people will want an honorable America again.

9. Democrats should have had 2 year Lameduck session
Too bad the Democrats didn't use the last 2 years as a Lameduck session.
