MSNBC The Rachel Maddow Show - 3 November 2009: "Fringe and Purge" segment. Dick Armey embraces town hall disrupter.

- snip -

MADDOW: "The reason that sort of thing happened in so many different townhall meetings during the month of August all around the country is, in part, because those things were not spontaneous. Organizing memos were circulated ahead of the health care town hall events. One of them was authored by a Connecticut man named Bob McGuffie. His memo, which was called 'Baracking the Town Halls - Best Practices,' called on town hall attendies to '... rock the boat early in the Rep's presentation. Watch for an opportunity to yell out... just short intermittent shout outs... the goal is to rattle him... stand up and shout out and sit right down. Look for these opportunities before he even takes questions.'

In our reporting over the summer, we described the author of that 'disrupt the town halls' memo as a FreedomWorks volunteer. Because of the extreme behavior at some town halls and the amount of attention they got, FreedomWorks chairman Dick Armey tried to disassociate himself and his organization from that memo specifically, on Meet The Press, while at the same time attacking me for us reporting on it."

ARMEY (VIDEO): "We got a situation where somebody in Connecticut that we did not know and who did not know us put out something that was mischaracterized and then attributed to us by somebody who obviously didn't have enough diligence in their ability to do their research to get their facts straight. These things happen. People get blamed for what other people do, but the fact is that just causes further aggravation. Especially when you start talking about elected officials, people that have the privilege of having news shows under the license granted by the federal government. They should at least have the adult discipline to get their facts correct."

MADDOW: "'People get blamed for what other people do. That guy in Connecticut had nothing to do with FreedomWorks.' Well, today, The Hartford Courant dispensed with that myth once and for all, when they reported that Dick Armey and his primary all-the-Republicans strategy is heading to Connecticut next Wednesday for a strategy session with:

the author of the rattle-them, disrupt-them, shout-them-down, tea party town hall memo

...who just a few weeks ago Dick Armey was saying had nothing to do with Dick Armey or FreedomWorks.

When Mr. Armey said 'people attacking me should at least have the adult discipline to get their facts correct,' I couldn't agree more, Mr. Armey. Enjoy your meeting next week with the guy you denied knowing. The guy you denied any connection with. The guy you attacked me for saying you had any connection to. If you want to come on the show afterwards to talk about adult discipline or anything else, you would be most welcome."

2. two workers at ACORN mean "Obama has direct ties with corrupt election riggers" ...
Armey has meetings with the guy who released the memo ... and it's "Hey, I never met the guy ..." ... and the media goes silent ...

4. she is way too mature, too responsible, too sensible to debate
a clown like Armey.

He and his ditto-head followers only respect only childish loud rants and sound bites.

5. I see Dick Armey is still the pathological sleezebag liar he was while he was in Congress.
How do people like Dick Armey sit among other people on national TV and make bald-faced lies that they have to know can be verified easily and instantly? Especially with Rachel Maddow and her reputation for fact-checking.

Any bets on whether Armey takes Maddow up on her offer to appear on her show?

6. It's easy to tell when Armey
and other Republicans are lying. Instead of answereing the question at hand they go into filibuster mode so as to not allow the other side to expose their bullshit.
Condeleeza Rice did it to the 911 Commission. The fact that no one stops them in thier tracks only enables them to continue lying. The magic words for anyone confronted with a Republican filibuster are to be said with increasing volume and force until the Republican relents and gives up are "Stop Talking." Unconsciously the person who is jabbering hears their third grad teacher or mother and falls in line. Try it some time.

11. this isn't "gotcha" journalism
Edited on Wed Nov-04-09 01:33 PM by SemperEadem
this is reporting the truth.

The 'gotcha' part of this came when Armey CHOSE TO LIE--he got caught in his lie and was exposed. That's the way it's supposed to work.

13. I know
i'm referring to her style, which has been described as dead pan gotcha journalism styled delivery. And it is used to confront people who lie, like armey. That IS the way it's supposed to work, thats correct.. it's just not the journalism that I prefer. Just a personal preference. I enjoy the work of rachel and other people that do this. They do a great job, it's just not what I like to watch, my personal preference is investigative journalism like 60 mins, or christina amonpour (however you spell her name) on cnn.... its just a preference thing, not an attack on her.

19. "news shows under the license granted by the federal government"
?? MSNBC is a cable news station. If he's referring to FCC licenses, they apply only to broadcast television and radio. Which would in any case license the station, not any particular program.

Oh, wait. Faux News is a fully licensed talking point redistribution center for the Republican party. My mistake. Carry on.
