1. hahahaha - poor Georgie Porgie

If they stood up, he might get spooked and run like something bad was about to happen.

3. HANNITY' AMERICA sure isn't MY AMERICA !
It's nice knowing we have a President being shown the respect for the office again. Change is coming from the bottom up in Appalachia.

4. Funny
The press did not stand for Bush because he is a war criminal and will be prosecuted according to the law of the United States of America. If Obama covers Bush's war criminal behind, Obama will also be committing a crime and will answer to the law

I'm surprised the reporters didn't all take off their shoes and commence hurling them in Chimpy's direction.

Seriously, this nonsense has been debunked - http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=8390341&mesg_id=8390341

6. Interestingly, their reaction was spontaneous with Obama, who just "dropped in".
Which makes it more significant, I think, as it was an automatic reaction, not a matter of protocol

Fucking awesome!

Recommended!

9. Well
Say or think what you want. I think it is too bad that they did not stand for Bush. It's respect for the office, not the person who holds it. I am happy that they may have figured that out, but when the President walks in the room, everyone should stand.

10. Disagree
"It's respect for the office, not the person who holds it." No offence Sherman but I've had enough of that sentiment.

An "office" is irrelevant until it is filled. Government offices are "organic" in that they have no function until there is a living person in that office. Beneficial government must be organic. Cite the term, "an organ of the people", in reference to the press or populist political oratory.

My point in this semantic torture is: Respect for an office may be what prevents some removing from office many who occupy the office to the detriment of the people. Disrespecting an office holder may keep him in check or at least send a necessary signal.

A government is for, by and of the people, I've heard. The rest is merely the trappings of tradition and other historic myth. It's important because myths and traditions man-up wars. War mongers thrive on undeserved deference.

14. Yes, we will disagree
And I don't think any office is irrelevant until it is filled, it is simply an unfilled office and it in this case it has a function as is stated in the Constitution (which might be why we are sure that it is filled at all times and have a clear line of succession to be sure that it is). In this case the office includes that "Head of State" thing, so i believe the office (and thereby the office holders) deserve a certain level of respect, which includes standing when they come into the room. As to the argument regarding deference and removal from that office (I might draw your attention to the Clinton Impeachment proceedings, I believe they were in the newspapers of the day), so even a popular and some would say respected President (Head of State) came to the process that could have removed him from office.

I will add that I consider Mr. Bush to be the worst President we ever had in this nation's history, but if he were in office and walked into a room in which I was seated I would have stood up. I would (and did) ask my Congressional Representatives to impeach him, but while in the office I would have at least stood in respect for the office and the history (or historic myth as you choose to describe it).
