BECCLES, England: This winter a 50-foot-wide strip of Roger Middleditch's sugar beet field fell into the North Sea, his rich East Anglian lands reduced by a large fraction of their acreage. The adjacent potato field, once 23 acres, is now less than 3 - too small to plant at all, he said.

Each spring Middleditch, a tenant farmer on the vast Benacre Estate here, meets with its managers to recalculate his rent, depending on how much land has been eaten up by encroaching water. As he stood in a muddy field by the roaring sea one recent morning, he tried to estimate how close he dares to plant this season.

"We've lost so much these last few years," he said. "You plant, and by harvest it's fallen into the water."

One thing that is obvious is the Governments know that low lying coasts are gone and it can't be stopped.

And I'll point out that England is an island with London being vulnerable to the sea

either the governments want the deaths or they didn't think it was going to happen so soon Idiots

2. Sorry this has very little to do with sea level rise but ...
everything to do with very poor coast management

A map of the area can be seen here http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?lat=52.4045&lon=1.7181&scale=25000&icon=x

The area near Beccles has been subject to erosion for centuries (famously the village of Dunwich was lost in mediaeval times) due primarily to the reclaiming of land from salt marsh. The area is south of the Norfolk Broads the control of which leads to a decrease deposits of silt in costal waters. In the past massive investment was made in sea defenses which did little for the area "defended" and increased erosion elsewhere. A few years ago the Environment Agency decided to cease many of the more pointless schemes and allow the coast to find it's own balance. This decision has been loathed by many of the large estates.

Please note that I believe that climate change will be making matters worse but is not the primary agency for this erosion

3. Correct
but then we do have the advantage of being here and having that local knowledge. A substantial amount of East Anglia was once salt marsh. They're exposed to devastation from storm surges whenever a spring tide coincides with a low pressure area off the east coast of Scotland sucking up the level of the North Sea.

4. Your point is valid
inasmuch rising sea levels will make any already bad situation far worse. See my note above.

7. Rising sea levels have been proven and our a fact
In Ghomara they have only mud embankments holding back the sea and you see the coast of Norfolk has NOTHING to protect it
from the sea...

Don't be fooled by these governments they say 30 years but the way Antartica and Artic is melting I predict it will be less
and here is the frightening thing for England ...its an island just like Indonesia is

Its almost like Bush & Blair is on a mission to kill millions by continuing to put CO2 emissions at unregulated rate
