GOP Congressman Jokes About Pro-Obama Vote Suppression
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/10/15/gop-congressman-jokes-abo_n_134769.html

During an event at the National Press Club just last week, Rep. Tom Davis of Virginia was asked whether the Republican Party had any strategy for trying "to keep those new voters who might be voting for Obama from in fact continuing on down the ballot." His seemingly tongue-in-cheek answer - "Well you're talking about voter suppression and we would never do anything along that line" - actually engendered hearty laughs.

It is, to some extent, difficult to determine how much Davis was trying to make light of the question as opposed to sarcastically riffing on GOP strategy. But his follow up line seems equally telling: "I think it's fair to say we're not going to spend any money educating them on what they need to do, but that's what you do in these kind of elections."

:grr:

1. Tom Davis is a lame duck
who is retiring this year because he knows he can't win in his district.

7. Winning Reelection wasn't an issue with Tom

He would have won easily. He is a champion of the Federal worker (one of the few Republicans that is) and there are tons of them in his district. He told a town hall meeting last spring that he was tired of running every two years and thought that it was time that he ran for the senate with Warner retiring. The Republican GOP thought otherwise sticking Gilmore in the race. Their reason -- Tom wasn't Republican enough. Gilmore is way down in the polls and it looks like Tom's congressional seat is going democratic. He hasn't bolted the party because of this kick in the a$$ but his answer to the question about new voters pins his party's real colors up on the wall for all to see.
