Send them this video and it will shut them up in a hurry.

Also check out these videos/articles you may have missed (as well as my polite rant at the end):

1. "They take pride in it."
I've seen it. Anti-intellectualism is rampant in this country, fly over state or no. I had a boss losing the Iraq argument with me, and she just blurted out something about us bringing them civilization and stalked off. I was stunned.

How do you fight that kind of ingrained, condescending, stupid?

5. Heaven forbid someone should pronounce it properly.
This is a man who has actually been out of the country and has some knowledge. I cringe when the morons on the right pronounce NUKE-U-LAR or I-raq.

6. Not just taking pride -- it's a deliberate insult
Did you ever meet somebody who persistently got your name wrong and refused to be corrected? You know it's not just stupidity -- it's a finger in the eye, a way of saying "I don't have to be bothered recognizing your humanity."

Same thing with countries. If you can say their names wrong, it's a way to show your superiority to them. Extra brownie points for saying them with a particularly braying and donkey-like vowel sound -- like a long "ai" in "Ai-raq" or a flat, nasal "æ" sound in "Pækistan."

And double-extra brownie points if you can then sneer at anyone who's perceptive and considerate enough to actually say these names more-or-less correctly. How weak and unmanly of them!

7. Easiest way to get "one-up" on them...
is speak their language. Ridicule THEM for being ignorant and uninformed. Don't attck their intellect, attack their ego. (Yes, for them the 2 are not as closely attached as yours or mine) Say something to the effect of, "Why should I listen to anything you say? You can't even figure out how to pronounce the name of the country!? And you are going to try to tell me about .....? Please..." More effective in front of an audience, of course.

9. K&R Yes, they do take pride in mispronunciation of words.
I live in the South, they are famous for mispronunciation of words. And, if you don't pronounce words to their liking they call you a Yankee. Which doesn't bother me in the least.
