I wonder what all the immigration nutjobs think when they see the son of undocumented immigrants from Mexico representing the U.S. and draping himself in the American flag? I'm proud of this kid, he didn't even have his own bed until he went to train at the Olympic center. He rose up from poverty, his mom sacrificed for him, his brother did, and he's now an Olympic champion. Way to go!

1. hospital
Even worse, maybe the parents had him delivered in a US hospital. For some reason, guest workers having babies in US hospitals really seems to chug at some people´s chains.

3. because it makes their children U.S. citizens
In their xenophobia they all feel like they'll get overrun with brown people. It freaks them out. I read an article some time ago about one lady who was at a train station stopping all the Hispanic women who looked pregnant and telling them to go back to their own country or practice birth control because the U.S. was a country meant for white people or something like that. You just can't deal with stupidity like that.

4. I am going to take the risk of getting yelled at.....
Edited on Wed Aug-20-08 02:16 PM by DWilliamsamh
I am happy for this guy that he won gold. As a sports fan and proud, competitive American, I am even happier that he added to the U.S. medal count. He was born here I take it and is a legit American citizen, which I have no problem with.

Here's the part where I may get yelled at. I do have a problem with the fact that his parents broke the law. Should they be deported? Obviously not at this point. I don't have a solution I am just asking a question about the principle of following the law. Why is it such a horrid thing to want immigrants to this country (regardless of their origin) to comply with the laws of immigration? Let me be clear, the laws and policies should be modified so they are neutral and don't form some racist bar to immigration. But even if the current laws are "wrong" they are the law and the way to correct the situation is to change the law, not to just break it or encourage other people to break it.

I know that there are plenty who use "immigration enforcement" to advance their racist ideals, but I don't think the idea of people following the law (even immigration law) is a bad thing in and of itself.

Edited for spelling...and a couple "oh-yeah-and-another-thing's" ......as usual.... LOL

7. Yeah, but here is the problem with that
We don't really enforce existing laws. And businesses will knowingly hire people who enter our country illegally and pay them lower than minimum wage etc. People who come to our country often have little choice. Yeah they break the law, but this isn't something as malicious as going out and mugging somebody. What if you lived in a dirt poor poverty situation, and you had two choices, live in absolute misery, or make a rough trip to America and get a decent job picking fruit etc etc? Not much of a choice. Our immigation policy is not rational, and makes no real world sense. The more egregious crimes are the people who exploit these workers and get away with it. If we find a way to legally allow them in our country and for businesses to legally hire people and pay them properly, we'll be fine. So yeah, Cejudo's parents may have broken a law, but they did it to survive and give their children a better life. Whereas it's pretty convenient to look the other way at those businesses who help make this situation possible in the first place.

8. Ah... you've hit the nail on the head..
I have been saying for years that enforcement of existing laws is the cure. And I am not talking about tighter borders. I'm talking about butting business people in JAIL for hiring illegals. I agree: as long as I knew I could make something and give my family a life out of stultifying poverty, I would come here by hook or by crook. But if there was no job waiting for me I wouldn't come. The side effect would b that our domestic job market would get better for those already here as labor laws could be actually enforced in all segments of industry.

So the answer is to start throwing CEO's and COO's in jail. You see the supply of jobs for illegals dry up quicker than Barbara Bush's @%$$!

5. Wonder if Vince will sign this guy?
"Vince" meaning Vince McMahon, owner and promoter of WWE. The big wrestling companies (WWE, AJPW, NJPW and NOAH) always make some attempt to sign amateur wrestling champions on the grounds they usually turn into seasoned professionals and at least one ended up as the best in the world (Kurt Angle until his body fell apart). This guy is talented, young, has a built-in story and he's from a demographic with Vince is trying to crack.

6. He's way too light
He wrestles at 121 pounds, so maybe not cutting he's around 135 or so. He has expressed interest in MMA, and would probably fit into a 135 pound weight class pretty well once he bulks up a few pounds.
