State employees union sues governor

May 20, 2007 06:59 AM

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- The largest of the state employees' unions is taking Governor Carcieri to court.

The American Federation of State, County and Municipal employees wants the governor to comply with a new law requiring him to report the names and salaries of all private consultants who work for state government.

They argue the government now has to report those names four times a year under the Government Oversight And Fiscal Accountability Review Act, which passed over Carcieri's veto.

A court hearing on the dispute will be held next month.

A Carcieri spokesman says that lawmakers erred in writing the law. He says, as drafted, the bill does not apply to any one of the state's current staffing and consulting contracts.
