OKLAHOMA CITY -- Reports of stolen and damaged political signs are common during most election seasons. However, a local union leader told Eyewitness News 5 this week that a barista who works at a Starbucks across from his shop is responsible for stealing at least one Obama-Biden sign.

Larry Gaines put the sign on his property outside the International Union of Operating Engineers, near the Broadway Extension and Britton Road, in northwest Oklahoma City.

He said a Starbucks customer overheard the worker bragging about swiping the sign and dumping it behind the store. After taking photos of the inside of a Starbucks trash bin, Gaines called police.

An officer talked to the staff, and the sign was soon returned, he said.

"They talked to my secretary, and they were apologizing to her profusely," Gaines said.

Democratic Party Chairman Ivan Holmes said there has been a surge of stolen and destroyed signs, several thousand statewide.
