John Edwards to Address Labor College Grads

http://blog.aflcio.org/2008/06/20/john-edwards-to-address-labor-college-grads/

by James Parks, Jun 20, 2008

Every graduation is special, but this year’s commencement at the National Labor College (NLC) marks an important milestone. This is the school’s 10th annual commencement, and next weekend, the school will celebrate a decade of providing a college education for union members.

Some 67 graduates will receive bachelor’s degrees at the June 28 ceremonies on the NLC campus in Silver Spring, Md.

Former presidential candidate John Edwards will deliver the commencement address. Edwards, who grew up in a working class family, is a former U.S. senator and was the Democratic candidate for vice president in 2004. A strong supporter of workers’ rights and social justice, he now leads Half in Ten, an effort by several organizations to reduce poverty in the United States by 50 percent within 10 years.

AFL-CIO President John Sweeney, AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Richard Trumka, NLC President William Scheuerman and elected officials also will participate in the NLC graduation ceremonies.

Established as a training center by the AFL-CIO in 1969 to strengthen union member education and organizing skills, the NLC is now the nation’s only accredited higher education institution devoted exclusively to educating union leaders, members and activists. The NLC became a degree-granting college in 1997.

1. WTF is he going to say to them?
Attention college kids:

"Hamstring your colleagues, sell out BIG TIME, invest in hedge funds and predatory mortgage brokers! You'll make out like BANDITS!!!"

I really hope he doesn't start actually campaigning for Obama. He'll harm more than help, I am sure.

3. Funny,
It's always those that talk the loudest, that know the least.

5. Absolutely. I wish he'd just shut up, too.
Still - he might be able to help Obama in some of the southern states, like the Carolinas. I think that I remember Edwards getting some good union endorsements, during the primaries. Perhaps his primary successes with working class white guys will do Barack some good...couldn't hurt, maybe...

6. I think you're confused-
You are the person that needs to shut up. I guess his union endorsements were simply because he's some rich guy.

What an ass you are. Perhaps you should increase that post count before you start disparaging a man that has been a hero to many here on DU. I worked in four different states for that campaign. I've spoken with the man and his family, and I must say, you have no idea what you are talking about. I mean, the United Steel Workers and SEIU have always been about the rich people, right?

7. Welcome to our forum

Your opinion is welcome here by all means. I'm not a moderator. We usually treat everybody in here with respect. We are all D's! This is only the second time this forum has fallen victim to the type of things that go on in other forums.

I myself donated time and $ to the Edwards campaign.
